New tank/ old tank- sand

I'm planning on switching over from a 30 gal hex to a 30/40 gal .the 30 gal was bare bottom and I plan to have a sand bed in the new tank- the hex is cycled and I'll use all the same rock. Can I use sterile sand or do I need to buy live sand or maybe a mix- I figure I'll need about 30+ lbs. I can get live sand in a 20lb for under $20- maybe just add some play sand to it- or just go for the paly sand altogether

I wouldn’t bother with live sand. I’ve always been skeptical about what can actually survive sitting in a bag on a shelf. I wouldn’t use play sand from a hardware store... don’t know what is in it but it’s probably silica based. I would get dry aragonite sand from a pet store. It will get life over time especially if you are using live rock.

The “live” in live sand survives because it is dormant in that state. But with that said. You can use dry aragonite if you are using established live roc. you will still go thru an ugly phase but it should be greatly reduced with the live rock. Best of luck with your new build and Keep us posted on your progress
