Nikon D40 Plainsboro NJ

I have a Nikon D40 I bought brand new a little over a year ago. It comes with the kit lenses 18-55mm non VR, and 55-200 with VR. Neck strap, battery, charger. The body and lenses are in perfect condition. Always had a UV filter on the lenses so there are no scratches. Asking $400 OBO. I can't find the original box. This is a great camera for someone looking to get into dslr's

I have some interest, but need to speak with the Mrs. tonight

Question - I'm not camera savy at all. Having read a review quickly, I see this model is manual focus. This could be a change for me, being totally novice to non auto-focus photogrpahy. Is this correct for this camera and if so, how did you do in this regard?
Thanks
Bob

This model isn't manual focus with ALL lenses. The lenses need to have a focus motor in them for the focus to work. The lenses that come in the kit will autofocus for you. The older lenses without focus motors will not autofocus. Just means that you need to be selective with the lenses you purchase. Most retailers will warn you when you go to purchase lenses if they don't autofocus with the D40/60 cameras.

Thanks Phyl! that helps to start. I see there are many, many lenses and I will need to educate myself with some research. In fact, I see there are forums out there for Nikon lense discussion.

I'm sure I will need a good macro lense for tank shots and a zoom lense. Would these cover the needs of macro tank shots as well as your basic zoom needs?

You have two zooms that come with the camera. Those will cover most things you need for the kids for quite some time. A macro lens is a good chunk of change, but that can wait a little bit. In the mean time you can play with extension tubes.

Not dumb at all...

VR is vibration reduction. It is the Nikon "anti-shake" technology that the lens uses to reduce the crappy pictures based on your hand shaking.

This is typically more often employed in longer lenses where the slightest shake has a greater impact on the image so the longer lens has the VR and the short lens doesn't!

6mp which will print a nice 8x12 size photo, maybe even a bit larger. You could probably get away with 13x19.

Phyl thank you so much for fielding all of these questions. I got called away last minute with the military for a few days so I wasnt able to get online. All of Phyl's answers are dead on and more then likely way better then I would have answered lol. This was my first dslr and I wasnt camera savvy either but this is an entry level camera and pretty easy to get the hang of. I have taken some great shots with it. If I didnt come across a good deal on the new camera I bought I wouldnt be selling this one for a long time.

Hi Joe - I am still deliberating on things, so if you get other interest, certainly proceed with them. I did not want to leave this hanging. Thx
