Non-RR to RR Tank, worth the move or not?

Tank is 75gal non-reef ready w/ 20gal long sump/ref. that is been running for 6 months, thinking to switch to 75gal reef ready w/ 40gal breeder sump/ref.

Def the sump. Can't go wrong there. Though instead of a reef ready tank I would drill for an overflow and save the room.

In order for me to be able to use a 40gal breeder I also have to change the stand due to no having enough room....drilling the tank would be easyer but the room problem of the stand.

Problem is I don't have enough room to fit a 40gal breeder under my DT due to stand dimension (17 1/4 inches deep on the inside).

You can use a 30 gallon tank for sump if you don't want a new stand.

I assume you already drilled your tank or you're using an overflow box? If it's the later yeah I will definitely upgrade because you have to buy a new tank to drill anyway.

Look around for a 38 gallon standard. You won't need to modify the stand. They fit, they're often used under 75s.

I've only used drilled tanks so don't know whether it warrants switching that. But increasing water volume 25% is worth it.

Another problem is there's only 19 inches high on the front of the stand, so a tank higher than 19 and deeper than 17 inches there's no way I can fit under the DT.

Oh that's a problem. Sounds like an acrylic sump made for the 75 is the way to go if you can get one used. Maybe on RC. I think someone makes a 36x16 wide sump.

Thanks a lot but I got a 75 gal RR and planing to make a new stand and canopy with enough room to fit a 40 breeder...good to get his info anyway just in case, thanks again.

Juan, not sure if you’ve seen it, but here is the “accepted” frame design using dimensional lumber. With a four foot tank, all the boards could be 2x4’s. By building your own, you can now make it any height, width or depth. I would recommend topping it with ¾ plywood and using the same for the floor of the stand. If you want a shelf around the tank, I would also recommend a couple additional yellow boards in the top frame.

If you wish, I’ve got the tools, and we could cut the boards at my house. You would then be able to easily fit them in your car to take home and assemble.

You will also want to skin this stand with whatever floats your boat…from plywood to beadboard to fine furniture grade lumber.

paul's offer seems awesome. however if you want something custom made PM me. i just got a stand built from someone in new burgh NY-picked up in parsippany and it's stunning.
