Guys, I've heard discussion about pickup seaweed from local oriental stores. I wanted to go to the one in East brunswick. Is there a particular brand or type I should be looking for?

Thanks in advance for your help

Edwin, I’m disgusted with the East Brunswick store. They use to carry an unroasted nori. About 6 – 8 months ago they redid the store and reduced the amount of nori they carry. I was in there before Christmas and it was pretty poor on choices. I ended up buying nori in an Oriental store in Edison, but not the stuff I wanted. I’m still looking for an Oriental market that still sells this stuff (not roasted):

Oh, and when I was there in December, no one spoke English.

I agree. The East brunswick store has to be the most disgusting store I have been to.
They also double up with the rudest employees.

However, they still have the nori we want. Paul the nori are moved to one isle facing the checkout counters. It is right opposite the exit door.
There you will see green and red dried nori packs. Each pack now has only 10 sheets and costs like $3.5.
I have been feeding my tangs the red ones which are same as the one you posted a pic off.

If you also have a local sushi place, ask them if they use unroasted nori, and if they do, I suggest buying several from their bulk crates.

Just giving other options so you dont need to go into an Asian Supermarket if the customer service is not what you are used to.
I once found them to be rude until my family gave me some insight which helped me understand better - theyre not hired to be help to us. Different type of customer service but if you can get over the language barrier theres alot of cool stuff you can find.
Also, if you really want to ask them something, the easiest is to bring a picture. Sometimes what they stock is not in their language.

This one is a Korean brand, I can't read any Japanese, Chinese or Korean but do know the look of the symbols. You can try the HMart in Edison to see if they have it.

Trivan, thanks for the heads up.

It is Korean. I too can't read any Japanese, Chinese or Korean, and in fact have no idea what the differences are in their symbols. However, I can read the English in the lower left corner of the label that states Rhee Bros. Importers, manufactured by Korean Farms, Inc.

I did look around Rhee's website, and could not find this nori. Maybe it has been discontinued.

I have not checked out HMart, but I will. Thanks for that contact. However, I did go to Kam Man at 511 Old Post Rd in Edison, and they did not have this brand. Actually fairly limited, but I did buy some roasted nori just to hold me over.

EDIT TO ADD: Well I checked out Korean Farm, and they appear to be an importer as well!!!

I picked up some dried seaweed this past weekend from Hmart, was on sale for $7. not the particular brand that is posted above but it is indeed dried seaweed. My powder brown went to town when I clipped it to the tank.

I'll take a picture of the packaging later when I get home.

Just throwing this out there but with all the talk of trying to find a place to carry why don't we find a supplier and do a group buy.

NORI UPDATE

I took Trivan’s recommandation to try H-Mart in Edison. The first thing I must state is that it is a very nice store…..big….and clean…and they speak English, unlike the East Brunswick store. I believe it is a Korean store, but they carry other nationality foods (although I didn’t find my nationality….Irish Foods…and I’ll beat you to the jokes…Potatoes, beer and whiskey would fill that isle (not necessarily in that order.)

In the Seaweed isle I found a very large selection. I also learned a new word…..laver.

laver - noun Any of several dried, edible seaweeds of the genera Porphyra (the red algae) and Ulva (the green algae).

They also had this very large clear bag…maybe 26 inches high and a foot or so wide….and it too was called dried laver. However it wasn’t in sheet form, but look like raw seaweed that was matted together, forming a structure about an inch and a half thick…..for only 9.99. I was temped to buy this, but the quantity was too much.

Anyway I spent some time checking out the other nori choices. They had roasted and dried choices. I did not find the brand I was purchasing at East Brunswick. However, I did find one that was labeled as “dried laver” where you get 100 sheets for 7.99. The brand I was purchasing at East Brunswick was approximately 25 sheets for 3.99. Here’s a picture of it.

So to summarize my limited experience with Oriental markets and nori choices:

East Brunswick Oriental market was my original source for unroasted, but after reorganizing their store, they no longer carried unroasted brands. Thumbs down.

Kam Man market in Edison was checked out and had a limited selection of nori….all roasted. I did end up buying a package because I was out of nori. Thumbs down

H-Mart in Edison is my new favorite market…a lot of choices, clean and English speaking employees….and a fair amount of non-roasted choices or nori. Thumbs UP!

Here are the three noris I’ve tried, with the E. Brunswick one on the left, Kam Man roasted in the middle, and H-Mart’s dried laver on the right.

The roasted one was more cardboard like and almost felt like sandpaper. The two non-roasted where supple and soft feeling. My origin nori had more of a purple color, while the new nori on the right had more of a green color.

I actually tried to see what the fish preferred, putting up three different clips, and I didn’t notice any preference….they are just pigs and eat everything.

As far as a group buy, I spend very little on nori each year and so the cost saving wouldn’t be that much. That being said, HERE is a link for a nori supplier that supplies large quantities….1000 sheets per case. I have no idea what their “grade” lettering means, but they say Grade C is the most common for fine dining sushi bars….$59 for 1000 sheets. Also don’t know if it’s non-roasted.

Great investigative work, Paul. However please red post #5. East brunswick has the dried nori. I picked up 20 packets 2 weeks ago.

I'm gonna have to travel north to find some of this. Buying the branded stuff is getting way to expensive and I can't find it at all by me

I would buy that 1000 lot pack.... With 5 tangs... It seems like the way to go... I put four sheets in my tank per day
