Not a Gorilla Crab, what is it?

How bad are these things? I've had one who hitched a ride on some live rock and has been in my aquarium since the first tank. He's managed to live through some pretty tough times. I actually thought he didn't survive the amonia spike a few months back but I spotted him the other night, and he's getting really big! What do these guys eat? I don't see any destruction in the tank but I only have a few corals at the moment. What couldn't I put in the tank if I decided to leave him there?

Re: Gorilla Crab

My searches haven't been truning up much, but in this picture the author claims it is a gorrila crab. My crab looks a lot darker, more grey in color and possibly even more hairy. Maybe what I have is not a gorrila crab at all? I hardly ever see him so getting a picture might be tough.

Re: Gorilla Crab

If it has pointed pincer, that is a meat eater. It will eventually go for your corals as they are opportunistic feeders like most crustaceans. Fish included. If its pincers are somewhat flat, there is a good chance it is a vegetarian, but they are still opportunistic feeders. Personally, I would take it out and place it in the sump where it can act as a cleaner rather than a nuisance. Good luck in catching it. They are Tough to catch.

Re: Gorilla Crab

Thanks, I'll look more closely at it next time he is visible. I haven't really done my aquascaping as I'm waiting to find some pieces of live rock. When I do the final work I guess I'll have to find the crab and put him in the sump (or fuge if I get that far) then

Re: Gorilla Crab

We had a gorilla crab feast on several fish.  They'd just disappear and we never knew what happened to them.  Then one day I see an anthias hanging upside down underneath a rock clearly being held by something.  After a bit of searching we found it to be a gorilla crab.  I'm not sure if he actually hunted down and killed the fish we lost or if he was just part of the disposal crew but either way he had to go.

Here he is after removal:

Re: Gorilla Crab

It's a shame they aren't reef safe. That's one wicked looking crab. I'm going to try to get a picture of the crab in my tank when I get back in town.

Re: Gorilla Crab

Last night we spotted the creature in question and the live rock on which he lives. I imeadiately pulled the rock and put it in the sump. The uh crab? was hiding deep down in a hole but this morning I spotted him with a flashlight. I snapped a few pictures. The flash didn't seem to bother him. It doesn't look like a Gorilla so now I'm wondering what it is.

Interesting, he looks nothing like the pictures that JohnS_323 posted. Is Gorilla Crab a general term for most hairy crabs?

no, it's an orangutan crab!

no, seriously, gorilla crab is a loosely defined term for hairy meat eating crabs.

Hmmmmm.........

I'm crabby even if I haven't been drinking. Does that make me a limited edition super nuclear explosive gorilla crab????

I’ve been loosing mega-bucks worth of shrimp and hermit crabs over the past few months and had no idea until I read this thread that my cute, fuzzy little hitch hiker was the culprit.  So tonight, with flashlight in hand and three, make that four, glasses of wine in my belly, I hunted him down.  And there he was, caught like a deer in headlights, devouring the remains of a blue-clawed hermit crab.  So I did what any nut that pays about $500 a pound for seafood and stabbed him right between the eyes with a screw driver.

Then I paused, with screw driver in hand, and realized that… I… am not “reef-safeâ€￾.  I am so ashamed.
