Oceanic Tank Question(s)

As seen in another thread, I have a 58 gallon that's not reef ready. I'm not fond of that at all since i'm used to a built in overflow that drains and returns from the bottom. I'm not too sure how I feel about aftermarket overflows. Can Oceanic tanks be drilled? If so, Which overflow kit would be good for the 58? GPH? Should I just sell the system and get a used (around the same size) that's reef ready?

I know this is a lot of basic questions coming from me. Maybe i'm just over excited.

Glass-holes overflow……700 gph should do it. Kit comes with everything, including the drill bit.

HERE’s how you tell if the glass is tempered. You cannot drill tempered glass.

Well! I guess I know how you feel about me!

From Oceanic's site.

Is the glass in my aquarium tempered? The bottom pane of glass on all Oceanic tanks (drilled or not) is tempered except for the Ultimate series and custom drilled tanks. The sides, fronts, and backs are not tempered. Please keep in mind that any drilling of the tank or alteration from its original manufactured state will void the warranty.

I was also used to the dursa overflow in my 75 that was DEAD quiet. I hear the GH ones can be quite noisy? For those of you that use this, how did you work your return line? Another drilled hole? Or hang over?

They come with hard tubes that you put into the holes in the back of the overflow. Quiet as a mouse. I'm running the 1500 gal/hr kit. Very quiet.

I have the 1500 gph Glass-Holes as well. With this one you have two, 1 ½ lines coming out the back of the overflow (and through your glass). The 700 only has one 1 1/2” line coming out the back. Here’s the back of my tank where you can see the two fat pipes for the overflow. The ¾ pipe is the return.
