Online Suppliers - Experiences

Thought this might be a good way to promote site we order from or to let others know to beware.

Has anyone ordered from the site ReefScience? I am thinking of ordering a skimmer but have been burnt before - years ago by a different site that no longer exists.

here is my 2 cents. Why not buy local and support your local fish store. Its alot less likely that you will be burnt. Fish stores all over are struggling in this economy and to order something from a warehouse just to save a couple bucks doesnt make sense to me.

Good point made by HarlequinReef. If we don't support our local stores now when it is soooo critical we will not have them later. There are some great area sponsors and local store that I would hate to lose over a few dollars and a really bad economy. Check with your LFS. If they don't carry the skimmer tha you're looking for on their shelves they may be able to order it for you. At least give them a chance.

I've never heard of the site you're planning on ordering from.

Honestly that foes without saying. In this economy we are all starting to struggle in some ways. I frequent the stores a minimum of 4-5 days per week and do make purchases. No, they do not carry this particular product nor can they order it yet. Happen to need one asap but when you go to the stores and consider another product in which the price is a little over 150 more than online, you consider that to be more in your pocket to make the purchases in the stores.

This was in no way meant as a topic to express the buy-in-stores which appears in a lot of the topics, it was meant more to help each other out if any of us have been burnt. Matter of fact I have been reefing for over 30 years and trust you me, poor prodcut, especially skimmer, pumps, lights, have been pushed on me in the stores...

Just trying to get view points on sites and to aid others that may be in need of this information. ::)

No harm meant but, Don't a heck of a lot of us make frag and equipment purchases from each other here in the forums when we could be "supporting your local store"?

Ive ordered live stock from reef science before but with dry goods your better off going local. He doesnt really specialize in dry goods mostly odd balls corals and stuff. Hes in North of South Carolina.

Just an FYI, Bigs Als is actually in canada. There warehouse is in canada and their offices in Niagra.

When they ship they carrier it over the border and mail it from NY. They lost a package I ordered and when i called them they told me.

Thanks for the input. I have heard quite a few concerns from people dealing with Canada purchases. Not to say they are all bad. I was going to get a skimmer from Reef but it turns out there is another delay in customs and that kinda makes me feel a little uncertain.

As it turns out I know they guy who runs seatrademarine and he has what I need... got lucky. Have dealt face to face with him many times and as usaul I felt bad not going to him right out of the gate.

Local stores.. they are good too but sometimes you have to travel a lot to find something that is needed fast and ordering is not an option, although I do respect the comments above.

If my local LFS does not carry something, I order from marinedepot.com I have ordered several skimmers and other various things from them with no problem at all. They also have just about everything.

i support alot of lfs in the area with frags, but they just sting ya a little too hard with drygoods. if i can get something 60% cheaper, i will. its not just the businesses struggling in this economy ya know

There are a couple online sponsors Tom and Faith have an online biz...listed at the bottom of our sponsor list. Their prices are pretty good. Premiumaquatics.com does group buys for us too so check them out the prices standard are good.

tfjpetcenter.com is a sponsor and a great store. If they carry it, you can do local pickup in Toms River which means no shipping.

reefscience - i've never dealt with Chad personally but my friends have (this is 5 years ago mind you) and it was all positive. They only deal in live-goods - tfj is a drygoods store. That stated, i could be wrong but I don't think tfjpetcenter is online anymore.

Group buys (e.g. thru Premium Aquatics in Indiana) are available only to members.

TFJ has closed their "doors" so to speak. They pulled the site down as well. Shame really. They've been a long time supporter of the club.

If is a shame to hear that, then I would go with marinedepot.com as my preferred online retailer.
