ORA Birdsnest

hey guys brand new to this site and relatively new to reef keeping. i purchased a frag via ebay about a week ago the frag itself was ok but it looked partially bleach. It has not gotten worse but it has not gotten better either. Is there anything special i can do to remedy the situation? I have a 25 gallon tank bowed front the parameters are ph = 8.1, calcium 420, sw 1.026. thanks

Do you test for ammonia, nitrate, calcium, magnesium, posphates? What kind of lighting and flow?

Can you post a photo? What kind of lighting did the frag come from? What kind of lights do you have? Where did you place the coral in your tank? How was the coral shipped?

the frag is currently placed at the top with led reef lighting, 0 ammonia of course nitrate around 0 calcium 420 like i said it is in an medium to heavy flow area. The shipping was fed-ex overnight and they didn't deliver it so i had to pick it up and spend an hour round trip cause i was afraid it would die in the box. Fed-ex refunded me and the seller did also so i essentially got the frag for free. As a side-note my tank has been up and running for 9 months now.

Looks like rtn, would not give the frag much of a chance. The shipping likely doomed it.

Where are you located . There are a ton of vendors on here who sell that frag as it is pretty common. We order a lot online but only after I check to make sure I can't get it in person

My ORA Birdsnest grows like a weed since I raised my alkalinity from 7.2 KH to 9.5 KH. You could try to bring up your alkalinity if it is low. They also need Strontium and Trace Elements to grow.

It looks like there was some tissue loss but if it hasn't gotten any worse, there is a chance it might make it. I found that my birdsnest does not like the intense lighting from the LEDs try moving the frag down a little.

thanks for all the advice i was told that if i could save it,it would eventually just grow over the dead portion? Unfortunately, i live in cape may county not to many reef stores to my knowledge. if anyone knows of one let me know :p

Ocean Aquarium in Egg Harbor Township is the only LFS I know in the area.

Using a coral dip (Coral RX, Revive, etc.) could help it too. Dips don't only prevent infestations, they also help with RTN and STN.

Good stuff dude thanks i actually go to philly once every week for work but never have time to explore for coral spots this is actually not far off ill stop by next week :)

As a side note how are the prices for corals reasonable? like how much for a birdnest cost

Pricing is about par for most LFS. A lot of variables in pricing, so I don't know what to tell you, all depends on the size and quality of the frag. I guess if you like what you see and are willing to pay the price, you buy it. I resurrected my tank about a year and a half ago and have just started to collect SPS, so most of what I now have I've bought from other members, on line, or won during raffles at club meetings.

Have to agree with Jim. Pricing is relative and depends on the purchasers opinion... but Aquarium Center's pricing is about the same as any other LFS I suppose.

In the past, I would have recommended that you not even bother shopping there for corals because their frag tanks were pretty sad looking. However, over this summer they have really improved their maintenance of these tanks, cleaned them out, painted the back walls blue (just makes the tanks look cleaner), and added all new LED lighting systems on their frag tanks.

They've also been getting in a better selection of corals (ORA are their biggest supplier now I think) and I will now recommend that you at least take a look at what they have in stock. Check them out if you're in the area.

But, as Jim said, the most economical way to get frags is by trading with other members, winning them at raffles at the meetings, etc. We also have our annual Frag Swap coming up on November 12th. There are tons of vendors there and they bring the cream of their crops... and pricing is usually very good. And there are raffles there too for corals, equipment, gift certificates, fish food, ... you name it and you can most likely have a shot of winning it there!

I just started converting my tank to a Reef this past month no way to frag swap without any frags. + i will be at a wedding on the 12th no way to make it there. :(
