Ordering Rock today need opinions!

I will be ordering my rock from marco today for my 90 and want to know everyones opinion. i am deciding whether to order 50 pounds or 100 pounds. If i order the 50 pounds i will add 50 pounds of live rock later. if i do 100 pounds i will just seed it with dr. tims one and only. What should i do?

Id check out reefrocks.net.

They have 50lb boxes for $85 shipped and for an extra $25 they will cherry pick the rocks, design them based on what you want, take pictures and then send them to you before shipping. Im pretty sure its the same rock as Marco rock.

Jonathan has ordered from him and his rockwork can be seen in his "bustin out of the nano forum" tale of the tank thread.

For the 90 you can get away with the 50 lb's and always add another 50 if you want. It is 50lbs dry rock so once the rock is wet it will weigh more. but heck for the price, Id just order 2 of the 50lb boxes.

Just my thoughts. Good luck. Looking forward to seeing that tank up. Its an awesome tank and stand.

Go with all dead rock. If you add LR from a store or buy it from another reefer, you have no idea what nasty hitchikers are coming with it. Also the rock can be loaded with detritus and other nasty gunk. As far as where to get it from I cannot advise you there, but I know a few guys here have ordered from marco and BRS, so hopefully they will chime in.

I am going to email them today! sounds like good stuff. i might just do 100 pounds from them and use the live rock from my 25 nano. i will talk to them about the cherry picked one so i know i will like the scape

Reefrocks is awesome. He will send you pretty much anything you want. He will include shelves too. He will also flatten some rocks so they will be good base rock. Really nice guy and I founf his customer service to e great. If you need sand he will throw that in too for just shipping cost. I got 50lbs of rock and 80lbs of sand for $100 shipped. Pretty good deal IMO.

Definitely check out reef rocks. You can also call them. I think the guys name is Steve and he can talk, so be prepared. Just tell him what you want and he will set it up. Send you pics for approval then box or change the layout. That will only cost a bit extra but IMO well worth the cost. Also according to him he is the supplier for Marco and is cheaper.

He has already gotten back to me via email. i will plan this out with him because he definitely seems like the best place to get it from. I cant wait to see what this all looks like.

I just started my tank with dry brs pukani a few months ago and love it. It is very light. I ordered about 90# for my 120 gallon tank. I ended up only putting about 70 to 80# in my tank and could have done less. The rock is nice and narly and easy to work with. The only knock on it that you will here people talk about is it has been known to leach phosphate. Some people will cook it before putting it into their tanks. Mine went right in and it did turn bright green and my phosphates were very high early on. With gfo I've been able to keep it around 0.02 and the bright green has faded. Knock on wood I've had zero issues with nuisance algae other than diatoms

I also ordered from reef rocks.net. I have a 75 rimless and I used 100 lbs of rock. So for a 90 I don't think that 50 will be enough. Well that depends on the aquascape you are looking for

Nice! Steve's a cool guy. It sounds like it'll be an interesting design. He does awesome work , I'm sure you won't be disappointed.

I've had good luck with BioDigest and Bioptim. Prodibio has a complete line of other additives, but these are the only two I use.

IMO, one of the best starters I have used is a couple cups of sand from an established reef. Even better, a couple cups of sand from a couple different established reefs.

Don't forget that if you use a starter culture you're going to have to add livestock pretty soon thereafter or the bacteria may die off.

that might be the best idea. i can use the live rock from my small tank to help and then also get a couple cups of sand from established tanks.

If you're going to use live rock I would use it in the sump. It really is nice to start out with all dead rock in the DT. No pests! I had leftovers so I popped them in CJ's sump for a month or so and put them in my sump. Plenty of life on them. So far only pods have made it from the sump to the DT.

Alright. i will put the live rock from my tank upstairs in the sump. i will seed the DT with the sand from various tanks.
