Oversized protein skimmer

I am getting started on my 40 breeder tank with a 20 gallon long for the sump. I bought a slightly used reef octopus XP-1000sss protien skimmer at a pretty good price. It is rated for a heavy stocked 75 to a lightly stocked 125. I have plenty of room in the sump. Will the skimmer be effective, or should I look to swap it for something more appropriately sized?

Take all manufacturers skimmer ratings with a grain of salt. That skimmer will be perfect on that sized tank.

Thanks. It im glad to hear that is perfect! I have never been able to get a skimmer to work consistently in my nano reef, so I wanted to get it right in my new system.

I think you'll be happy with it. I've been using reef octo skimmers for almost a decade now and have had very few complaints. I actually still have my first one I bought back in 2009 and it still runs like a champ. Not quite as efficient as the new dc ones, but a workhorse none the less

Worst thing that would happen is that it wouldn't produce consistent skimmate

Love Reef Octo skimmer always worked great for me.
Currently using Eshopps and seems to be a workhorse as well.
