PC Retro

I bought some leds from feng a while back (they are probably only 2watt or so, I don't even know). I've used every other kind of lights on fish tanks or plants over the years, and just never believed that the little leds would be any good. I got the ones I have from feng because of concerns about heat during the summer. I was still skeptical right up until the purchase, but feng kept telling me that he saves tons of power and his coral grows very well. So I bought them, figuring "what the hell". Well I've had them over the tank for a while now, and I am definitely a "true believer" I'm looking now to replace my metal halide plant lights with leds. They really are awesome! The tank looks grat, the coral seems happy. They were well worth the money, and I am planning on buying more. To everyone on the fence about leds: seriously, give them a try.

Sweet, but you need to include details!

Is this your own DIY or a kit or did you buy the 12-pack that way? What mix of LED’s do you have? What size tank are you using this on? Drivers? Dimmers? Come on Brian, details!

Oh, and the first time I’ve seen a PC light fixture put to good use.

Ok details.

Fixture is a 24" PC fixture I got off eBay for $50 with all intentions of gutting it for LEDs. The fixture is actually perfect for this LED mod. The heatsink is the exact size to fit in there and the grooves in the top of the fixture line up perfectly with the cooling fins that I can drill and mound the heatsink. It has built in LED moon lights on their own circuit that I can run independent of the main LEDs. It also has a small built in cooling fan with its own power supply that i can use for upgraded cooling fans. I also added some hooks to hang the fixture if needed.

That is the Rapid LED Ultra Premium 12 LED DIY kit with dimmable driver and Rapid LED 4.25 x 9" pre-drilled heatsink. Kit comes with 6 cool white and 6 royal blue Cree 3W XP-G/E LEDs and a Meanwell dimmable driver. I am going to be running just one sink with all 12 (50/50 white/blue) run in series for now. I need the get the adapter cable for my reefkeeper ALC to allow me control over dimming. Plan is to run this for a while and see how it does. And if all goes well, since this light will be over a 20 long, I will get another 12 LEDs, 9" heatsink & driver. At that time I will split the white and blues to separate drivers to allow me independent control of the whites and blues. 18" spread of 24 3W LEDs in a 24" fixture should be some powerful stuff. I also have 80 degree optics but I don't think I will need them for now. The whole kit with the heatsink was $146 shipped.

When all that is said and done, I will upgrade the Biocube with a nanocustoms heatsink and duo 700 driver box and the LED stars I will get from Rapid LED. ;D
