Phosban from Group Buy Questions

Hello guys,

I'm trying to figure out how are you guys using the media. I have a phosban reactor from two little fishes. the media seems to be very fine to be used in the reactor. Do you have to rinse the media before placing in the reactor? does it have to go in a fine mesh bag?

Re: Phosban from Goup Buy Questions

The reactor is specifically made for this. There is a foam disk on the top and bottom of the reactor.

You will want to fill it with at least 200 ML (about 1/2 cup) up to 385 ML, about 1 1/4 cup. You want to use a slow flow pump, about 80 gallons per minute. The TLF reactor comes with a valve so you can dial it down. A mini-jet 404 dialed to the 3/4 position is about perfect.

Dump the GFH into the reactor, place the output end in a bucket outside of sump, and run on a slow flow until it runs clear (usually about 5 gallons of water). The flow should be so slow that just the top 1/16" of the GFH looks like it is lightly boiling.

Thats it.

Re: Phosban from Goup Buy Questions

We put ours into the reator and put the effluent hose into a waste bucket. We then run water through it slowly until all of the red is gone and the water is running clear. After it's clear, we put the effluent back into the fuge and set the flow so that the surface is rippling very slightly. It works pretty well.

One trick we found to loading the media into reactor is to put a length of 1/2" PVC over the dip tube in the reactor. This prevents any media from getting into it and is A LOT easier than putting a piece of tape over it like they suggest.

Re: Phosban from Goup Buy Questions

thanks guys, I'm going to have to go play with it since I had two reactors hooked up to eachother one running with carbon and the other with the phosban using a maxijet 400. I hope I could get the flow to low enough with this pump for both reactors to work properly.

Seperate them. Carbon needs a higher flow and the pressure of using the same pump going from one to another causes back pressure.

Either get 2 pumps, or a single pump with a Tee (or Y) and use valves on the input side of both to control the flow.

John. Great idea with the pipe over the tube. I use tape over the whole. Doesn't stick too well. Plus that would be a better idea for pushing the foam to the bottom. Thanks.

Re: Phosban from Goup Buy Questions

Do they have a GFO phosguard out there?

I checked out the link with the bags displayed, I don't like the brown stuff, you can't see the color change of phosban type PO4 remover. Phosguard is round and heavier too (at least it seems).

*I tried foster and smith PO4 remover at my sisters house. That was a mistake, the media is way too small.

Just my opinion ;)

Phosguard (Seachem) is falling out of popularity as it is aluminimum based rather than iron based. Though it does an better job initally to tackle a PO4, it can reach total exhaustion in 3 -4 days and is not well suited for maintenance mode. It also has a tendency to leach back, unlike iron based, which just doesn't absorb when its exhausted.

Re: Phosban from Goup Buy Questions

Good info, thanks. Do you like the Bulk reef supply media? Is it similar in size to Phosguard?

So these companies are allowed lie about leaching on their packaging huh? Damn shame!

Let me seperate comments here, one as GB manager, and one as a consumer.

GB Manager Hat: The GFH (Not GFO) we purchase is not purchased from Bulk Reef supply, it is purchased from another supplier. Since we get very very special pricing, we are not allowed to mention the name of the supplier, but rest assured, its the real thing.

User Hat: I love Bulf Reef Supply, the guys there are top notch, its a small 2 person operation and they go a great job. The GFO (Not GFH), they sell is the pelletized version. It is great and I have used it for 2 years now.

That being said..... $36 for 5 lbs is hard to sneeze at (from NJRC), and 1 being better than the other is sort of moot at that pricing. Either our bulk GFO or Pellet from Bulk Reef supply is a fraction of the cost at LFS or normal mail order outlets.
