Phosphates and Gfo depletion

So I recently started to battle high phosphates (.12 on hanna checker). I changed my GFO this morning and a 5 hours later I tested the output from my reactor and it showed .25??? Can GFO deplete that fast????

Thanks Dan

Yes GFO can deplete that fast in high phosphate levels, however since your phosphate level is twice as high after the GFO I would suspect a bad test kit.

Interesring that it can deplete that fast. The DT reading was .12 the reactor output was .25. I assumed the reactor output would be zero or at least less than the .12 of the DT.

Have you considered using Kent's phosphate sponge? It will remove the PO4 but needs to be changed within 48 hours or it will release it bank into the tank.

Good luck

Have you determined what the source of the po4 issue is?

It doesn't make sense. IMO Either the testing procedure was faulty before, or afterwards. Or or the kit itself made an error. But the information is bad most likely. Just start over with a new baseline.

You can do the math on the GFO and based on your po4 level, water volume and amount of gfo used, can determine how long it would take to fully saturate the media.

I used it in a gfo reactor. I was siphoning from where the water returns to the tank and the outlet of the gfo reactor put it back to the beginning thereby recirculating it. I went from a PO4 of 0.36 to 0.04 in 1 day, fortunately I didn't seem to stress the tank inhabitants.

If your not using a reactor I would put it in an area where the water must flow through it. Remember it will release the nutrients back into the water at about 48 hours.

No I have not and I am quite confused over this.

Tested tap tap water with salifert kit got 0 tested rodi with Hanna ulr kit got .12 after recently changed filters. Was also told you can't test fresh water with this kit.

Teated makeup water get .12 on Hanna. I definitely have some PO4 because I am getting green powder like algae in sand-bed.

I have used two different lots of regent to test with Hanna and get relativity consistent reading in DT between .10 and .16
