Photography help

Anyone on here really into photography? Im on the search for a decent entry level camera in hopes of taking better FTS and macros of my tank. Right now im using my ipad.. sooo im in need of a camera but know nearly nothing about them.

I'm in the same boat , using my iPad and iPhone and it just doesn't do a good job at all with the actinic lights

Hey Justin? What is the price range you'd like to stay within?

I was hoping to stay in the low 200s.

Yea i hate it, i tried using an older camera as well but that things a piece of junk., the ipad just cant handle the blue lighting.

If I were you I would look for a used dslr. The older generations can be had for very cheap but will be much better than a point and shoot in the $200 range. Photography forums have people selling used equipment all the time.

Plenty of used equipment can be had in your price range. I personally prefer DSLR over a point and shoot but you can get the job done with either. DSLR's can get expensive since you need to buy this lens or that as with a point and shoot you pretty much get what you get. No matter which you get there are a few things I would look out for: fully custom white balance (I use this a lot since I hate post production processing), macro range (the close the better in this case), and manual control (not a must and depends on how comfortable you are with manual controls).

If you are still shooting with the Ipod/Ipad, the lighting gels have been working great for me. 5$ is a good price.

There's a really sweet deal on slickdeals for a nikon d5200. It's double your budget however it comes with a warranty and lens.

I took a Nikon professional class ages ago, and the best advise they gave, was by the best lens you can afford, then put any body on afterwards. The quality of the picture is mainly based on the lens, and the SLR lens made 20 years ago will still fit the cameras today. The technology on the bodies move so fast, and the quality really doesn't change from a D5200 to a D7200. The thing that changes is the bells and whistles for a professional. A great SPR body will still take crappy pictures with a crappy lens, but a great lens on a lower end camera will come out great.

That camera is not bad, that was actually my second DSLR. As for a lens you are going to be limited with your budget. I know you can get an 18-55 cheap and the closest you can focus is about 10 inches. For a true macro lens you would probably be looking at the 50mm and you get about 2 inches closer for focus.

I use a Canon 16-35 and 70-200 to shoot my tank.

Might be a dumb question.. But can you explain the lenses? Would the lower # be a closer image and the higher being a zoomed out?

Im thinking for that price i may get the camera i posted. Seems to be a good place to start within my budget.
