why?

If our hobby is in danger then everyone that owns a dog or cat is also at risk

So unless you are going to evidence how the percula clownfish is harmful to the US economy, environment, or human health - I don't see an issue.

This bill is all about people bringing snakeheads in and releasing them. Or releasing huge pythons in the everglades. The video is pure hogwash - especially the legality behind breeding of hamsters? give me a break.

The sponsor of the bill is from Guam and she probably has first hand knowledge about people getting pets/animals and releasing it back into that island. It's a mess and she's trying to put some claws into their ability to fight back. I say good for her. If they tried to stop people from importing ornamental fish - I can assure you THAT would be "harmful to the US economy" and I'm sure some lobbyist somewhere would make sure that ornamentals would be included on the exempt list.

This bill will absolutely have an affect on our hobby. It can't help but. How far reaching the effect... well I guess we'll see. But when Pihrannah, lionfish and the snake heads are devastating local waters, I think there is some merit to it.

Part of the problem is that the hobby doesn't have a lobbyist to fight any of this in Washington. That means that the lawmakers don't know which fish would prove invasive and problematic and which ones would not be an issue.

That's not OUR lobby. That's the PET hobby (more focused on cats and dogs).

I was referring to that lobbyist. THEY are mainly pet, not focused on SW fish.

I think people should be able to own any type of fish or animal they want as long as your experienced or know what your doing and are approved to own one. Maybe if they make you sign a contract or something, maybe more stuff idk, As long as your not an idiot who is getting a snake or lion fish til it out grows it's living space and then release it to the wild, you should be able to keep one. Although i don't think you should be able to keep things that are close to the endangered species list unless maybe your an expert with a degree or something and you're going to breed them in captive.
So does this mean no more zoo's or aquariums are going to be opening or getting any new exhibits??? ::)

Zoos and Aquariums are typically approved for animals that are illegal for the general public (elephants, giraffes, etc, lol). They certainly won't be restricted in the same manner as the general public.

Guys the Bill is real and will def have an affect on the coral and fish importation. BY THE WAY ITS GOOOOD!!

But lets back track before we discuss the legislation. The only reason why this legislation is being put forth is because its being sponsored by politicians who are looking out for the interest of their legislative district. Most of these politicians have interest that involve invasive species.

This legislation was brought on by careless importers and vendors and hobbyist who don't understand that if its gonna get too big and you wouldn't be able to keep don't buy it. Vendors and importers bring in fish and inverts or macros that they know people cant keep and don't care.

Here are some of the committee member home locations
GUAM
Lousiana
American Samoa
Hawaii
South Carolina
Virgin Island
California
Puerto Rico
Mariana Islands
New Jersey
New Hampshire

There is nothing to lobby for with this legislation. They are not going after an industry they are trying to protect wildlife and preserve our oceans by making sure people dont import fish and animals that can be invasive. Most of our fish can not survive in water like ours but some of those areas on the list they will.

You are all lookin at this legislation from a me first point of view. If you knew that not having a certain coral or fish would make it possible for your grand kids to go diving or use a beach somewhere in the USA, doesn't that mean anything.

Or are you really concerned that you might not get that zoa or fish, or bird.
