Po4 at 0 wow!

So this really surprised me.because I had a phosphate issue recently after my tank move. I had a Dino outbreak like crazy. At the dvrc swap I traded for a reactor and gfo but I needed the sponges for the reactor (which are on order) so I figured I'd run it in a hob filter in my fuge until the sponges came.. tested 4 times with a Hanna and my phosphates are at 0. I was pretty surprised. I may not even setup the reactor now. I also added grape calpulera at the same time so idk if it was this or a combo of the two. Just figured I'd share. Colors on my sps look awesome. Im gonna feed more to keep a little phosphate in there as I've heard if the water is too clean it's bad for sps.

Could be just my impression, but when I got PO4 close to 0 my kenia tree, xenia, zoas and (strangely) RBTA are dwindled.
SPS and (strangely) GBTA are fine.
Anyone had similar experience?

Those corals like nutrient rich waters where as sps prefer very low. I have a sps and zoas tank so I have to find a happy medium which is why I will feed heavily so hopefully it hovers around .02 I find it harder to lower than raise tho lol so im happy with 0

soft corals produce a kind of toxin into the water that inhibits the growth of sps. Hence "dirty" water results in increased soft coral growth. Soft corals also do not care if you have changed out your bulbs or not.

This is why mixed coral tanks are actually tough to achieve. You end up with either a few lenient sps (caps and montiporas etc) and a lot of lps/soft corals...or all sps and very few lps/soft corals.

Those who can achieve a combo of both are not uncommon, it's just tougher in my opinion to achieve.

The effect of Caulerpa vs gfo on PO4 is no comparison. It was the GFO no question. You can run it like you are, but the problem is if its not in a reactor it starts to clump, loses its effectiveness, and you have to replace it more often. The stuff is expensive so most run the reactor.
