Powerhead

So one of my powerheads just stopped working, so I'm looking to replace both (I got them with my tank off Craigslist) so I wanted to replace both before the other goes bad too. I have a 55g but I'm unsure which to get, any recommendations?

I use the Hydor Koralia Evolutions on my tank. The only issue has been using them on my wavemaker, it's nothing fancy, just turns them on and off every 30 seconds. The pumps have been working fine, just occationally they blow backwards and then blow right the next time. The cover has a bumper that's supposed to stop it, it doesn't always. This bumper on the cover does break over time. But Hydor just sends me new ones. If you're not using a wavemaker, they work great and have great customer service. They are OK with a wavemaker, if you don't mind having to replace the covers every so often, maybe once a year or two.

is there a major difference in perfomance or durability? i see that the hydor are $20 more. is it worth the price? also, are the hydor magnet or suction cup?

The koralia's are both magnet and suction cup. I like mine they have both been running for some time. Only problem I have is like above when you shut off the might turn back on in reverse. If you don't mind spending a bit more the Sicce Voyager powerheads are nice too.

+1 on Sicce. I have a pair of them (the BIG ones) and they've been making waves via Apex control without a hiccup. They have electronic directional control, so they start the right direction.

or you can just go and invest on an MP10 or MP40 :p I recently upgraded to an MP40 and now I know why people love them so much. They are really worth the price and you can usually find used ones for sale at a cheaper price.

the ebay powerheads arent bad at all, like John said they have a tendency to start in reverse but if you keep them on all the time it shouldn't be an issue. you just have to unplug them and plug them back till they start in the right direction.

I upgraded from an MP40 to the Sicce. :) The Sicce is silent, vs the MP40. And the Sicce is like 1/3 the price. I have a few MP10's, I like them. The bigger ones are loud. And you can't point them anywhere but straight.

Im using 2 koralia evos on my 180g fowlr, I used to own a mp10 and a few mp40s, koralia for the price is awesome and i dont even notice them in the tank

I think I'm going to get the koralia evos, mp10s are a bit expensive on a college budget & they're 20% off right now.
Another question, I was just looking at my overflow it seems to have a build up on a film substance on the surface in between my overflow and tank is this due to the lack of water circulation this area is getting? There's only about an inch from the overflow to wall
