probably a dumb q....

The vast majority of it's 'food' is obtained via photosynthesis. Species in the genus are such an efficient photosynthetic machines that there are people investigating the potential to use some species, like oculata, for biodiesel production.

I was really thinking a spoon full of skimmate and a bit of tank water with a par38 bulb from home Depot would get a culture going.

I found one place in Florida selling something called f2 but I'm guessing it's just poop.

I do not believe algae eats anything. They use photosynthesis to create their food like plants (These with Chlorophyll A) and they need the same nutrients as plants as well (Nitrates and Phosphates - I would assume a carbon source as well). Algae types aren't closely related to each other so they can really differ. And some plants are called algae because they grow in the ocean or water. I believe plants are thought to have evolved from a type of early algae. Note the Cyanobacteria can also use light to produce energy. Many corals need light to grow and survive due to symbiotic zooxanthellae in their bodies. But some corals do not need the light. Note that I am no algae expert.

On Melevs reef he uses a product called Micro Algea Grow to provide the nutrients the phytoplankton needs. I would assume that using skimmate should also result in providing all the nutrients to drive growth. How well is an answer you would get trying it.

yeah micro algae grow has f2 and I saw a product on eBay called something f2 as well. I mean it's not expensive but it is a hassle to get (I consider anything I have to order a hassle) and it doesn't make much sense if it's something I'm throwing away already.

they refer to it as fertilizer.

Grew phyto for a while and f2 was the 'go to' food.
Do some research as the standard garden grow stuff in the yellow bottle work just as well (nitrates, phosphates, carbon as Mark mentioned)- Miracle Grow liquid I think it was.
After I ran out of my initial f2 I tried it - it wworked wonders and was a S&^t-ton cheaper.
Just don't dose it in your main tank, obviously.
