Purple Stag Peeling

Just came home and looked at my tank to see that my purple stag is peeling.:nervous: Nothing else looks bad. The only new addition was a neon green palau nepthea, and what I believe is a digi.

Parameters are
Nitrates-5
Nitrites-0
Ammonia-0
pH-8.0
Calcium-400
Phosphate-1.0
Sal 1.024
Alk-9
Temp-79

Nothing looks to out of the norm to cause this. Anyone have a clue as to whats going on?

Are your phosphates 1.0 or .10?? There is a big difference. Also what are you using to test?? If you arent using a low-range photometer, then its really tough to say what your PO4 is truly at. My guess is your PO4 is too high, which will cause the RTN that is happening to the acro.

1.0 and thats low for me as it was at 2.0 but has slowly been coming down since I have been running a phosphate reactor.

There is a hammer but its out of reach. I'm also runnin carbon so I don't know if its chemical warfare, but you never know.

Well that is your problem right there. Any SPS will pretty much RTN if levels climb above .25. I would recommend not adding any more SPS or even any corals for that matter, until you get your PO4 under .10. Keep running GFO, you will probably have to replace it often considering how high your levels are. Bring your PO4 done slowly, if you drop it too fast it could shock and kill your corals.

I was checking back on one of your posts. You added the bio chem zorb recently and you ended up dropping you trates quickly. It's possible that something there could have contributed to the problem at hand. The water clarity would have cleared up considerably.

Yeah. Quite a few. I'll attach a pic. A lot of them are fairly new and they are not so much growing but are encrusting.
Its still leaching out of the rocks from before I had a RODI unit. Thats the only thing I can think of. If you look back from my older post my PO4 was so high you couldn't read it. Lets just say 1.0 is amazing considering what it has come from. I still have a green monticap from back when it was that high. Don't know how to get it lower outside of doing weekly water changes and I added the reactor maybe a month ago.

I also did a bit of reading on it now that I know what it is (RTN). A lot of people say they had success with fragging what was good and trashing the rest. So far so good. I don't see any peeling from what is left.

Maybe it's the camera or the lighting, but most of the SPS in that last pic appear to be dull or browning in color. I realize you're already working on the phosphate issue, so hopefully you can prevent any further damage to other corals.

They actually aren't as brown as they show up on camera. I just cant figure this stupid canon out to adjust the white so it looks right.

Also no more peeling as of now. Fingers Crossed.

Yea, I'm still trying to get mine to take realistic pics too. The blue LEDs are not camera friendly, lol.

Glad things are looking better.
