how hard was it to train the mandarin

It wasn't hard for me at all, but I do think I got lucky with mine. At first it didn't eat pellets, so I bought some nutramar ova for it to eat. Then a week later, I mixed the nutramar ova with pellets. After 1.5-2 weeks I noticed it was eating pellets. I tried just feeding it pellets and I was so happy that he was enjoying it.

Yea I had a mandarin when I had a 55 fowler setup a while ago but he never took to frozen or pellets and ended up not making it , I'm considering getting one in the future for my 20. I've been reading a lot of forums that had heavy mandarin discussion and a lot of people are keeping them in smaller tanks if they train to eat frozen. I'm going to try to find one in my lfs that will take frozen. Which pellets were u using?

Yeah some people are keeping it in smaller tanks nowadays. Not really recommended but people do it anyway. Mine doesn't eat frozen mysis yet, but he'll accept pellets. The pellets I fed were from the frag swap this year marine pellets by instant ocean. He really likes it. It's going to be difficult to find one that eats frozen unless its from ORA. If you plan on training it, I wish you luck.
