RRS40287-2T.jpg Guys, any idea on how to DIY one of these? They r $50 a pop and I'd rather not spend that

When I was setting up my overflow, I was thinking about using a critter keeper to make one. It's designed to keep crickets or transporting small animals in. I ended up buying a manufactured one, but I still think it might work. They make them in a few different sizes, and there cheep enough to cut up and experiment with.

Marcus - you can shop around ebay might be able to get a cheaper version. Also if you want to DIY I have acrylic sheet you're welcome to come get some. I even have the blade to cut it but my table saw is not good enough. You do not need the teeth but you do need some screen to prevent fish or larger objects clogging the pipe. In my refugium I have a PVC pipe without the weir and i have some plastic netting around it. You can get the netting from these orange bags. You can then put a piece of eggcrate in the netting so it won't sag. But it's not pretty.

Where is the hole, on the bottom or on the side?

I see. I would just buy the OEM piece so as not to ruin the look. But why do you need it? There are two Redsea tanks in Trops and I don't remember seeing this one any one of them.

im getting this film on that one side of the tank. it may be the light but i am not sure. i was assuming it had to do with the lack of surface skimming. which is why i don't want to pay full price as i am not 100% convinced that i need to buy this thing

I would point the powerhead or return to the surface a little to add some surface movement. A little film floating around is ok but the film should not stuck in one side.
i agree, im gonna play around with the gyre and see whats what. ill keep peeps posted in my thread
