Reef Safe Angles

Hello all...I was wondering if there are any reef safe anglefish out there? I have 3 reef tanks with soft coral and zoos and would like to put in an angle or two but not to the poiunt where my coral and zoos would be in danger...Any Ideas out there??

It's really hit or miss. At various times, I've had four Centropyge and only one was truly "reef safe", all the others had a taste for something in the tank.

I think yr question is probably the most debated thing on reef sites.I have seen many people here put fish that are not reef safe and have great success.I have also seen and experienced many people who have added "reef safe" fish and have horrible results.I think alot of things are to be taken into account when adding fish such as feeding and how often,what type of corals you have or intend on having in the future.Also what you are willing to tolerate as in well I like that fish and it only ate a few zoos or corals.I def believe every fish does have differant personalities and also varied diets or likings to diff corals..

The Genicanthus species of angel is your most "reef safe" angelfish that there is. I have a bellus, watanabe, and a pair of semifasciatus and have never had a problem with any of them bothering my corals.

My goal is to have all SPS in my new tank. I am thinking of adding a Blue Face Angel. My plan is to feed the tank at least three times to keep the Angel satisfy.

I agree wit dnov, Good chance with the ones he listed especially wit the soft stuff. Had an emperor in a 95% sps reef, he never touched sps but once he tasted a zoa that 5% of them were gone real quick. He was great with everything else though.

I have been considering the bellus and watanabe and the semifasciatus just got added to the list. How are the tenperment of the three?

They get along fine. Initially there was some chasing and harassing between the females, but never anything serious. How big of a tank would they be going into? I would just make sure they have plenty of room.

In my tanks it's been hit or miss with many Angels. Had a Blueface that loved zoa's, when he was done with them it was a very large Welso, then Elegance, he went to the Purgatory tank. Keep them well fed and your corals healthy and there should be minimal damage, although any individual can become a terror. As of this moment in my 210 reef,(sps,lps, some softies) there's a 5" Emp.,3" Personifer,3" Jap. Blueline and a French. The Asfur and Queen came out only because they tagteamed the French and the Emp. The Queen did sample some Litophytons from time to time. My next experiment is Butterflies. That'll cause a collective shudder from most reefers.

I've had a majestic for some time, more than a year. He's never eaten SPS in any significant way, or my closed brain, but he did destroy a chalice when I first got him. A good fish, and fairly tough.

I only have a 120 which I'm not sure would provide enough room for even one of these.

i wish the flame angelfish was reef safe.. i am so tempted to put one in my new 90. i dont know if any other angels would work in the tank, i do love the flame though.

I had a flame in my 75gl reef and it didn't bother any corals. I currently have a potter and they are also known as hit or miss when it comes to be reef safe but so far so good. It picks on rocks and nori all day long. I'm sure if you supply them with plenty of food they will not bother the corals, but that's only from my own personal experience.

Nate, are you still going to have your other tank set up with the 90 going up? You can try keeping it in the smaller tank and see if it picks on your corals or not.

It will be set up for a few months while the new tank is set up. that would be a good idea. maybe i will keep one of each type of coral and see if he picks on them.
