How many folks are running a reef tank with a canister filter?

I have friend that wants to convert to saltwater from fresh but they have a 55 gallon corner tank with a canister filter.

What equipment do you guys recommend? what challenges that you forsee especially with canister and the infamous nitrate factory

60g with Fluval FX6 and HOB skimmer. I placed a CPR overflow just to hide equipment(not drilled)... heater, intake for skimmer & filter... Inside the overflow I created a filter sock to catch a good amount of debris CPR Retrofit Overflow Box. I clean the inside of the canister once every three weeks and there is very little debris inside due to the home made filter sock. The tank has mostly SPS and 2 LPS. I ran this same setup when I was using my son's 90g

I did this initially. My big mistake was not having a good HOB skimmer upfront.
Regular filter maintenance all should be good.

That was the key thing I was thinking. About that hob skimmer. So I guess that is pretty mandatory

My personal opinion and experience; always need a very good skimmer.
Drilled, built-in overflow, or not. my 2 cents.
