replacement cartidges

hey guys, it's been a while since i've been in the game here. im trying to get my 55 gal FOWLR set up again. i have a spectra ro/di (spectrapure FACTORY-REFURBISHED/Refurbished-90-GPD-RODI-System) that might need new filters. from the site, it looks like the replacements would cost almost as much as the entire setup.

that said, are there any cheap alternatives to purchase the filters for my ro/di?

thanks,
ryan

I'd leave the membrane alone and start by replacing the sediment filter and two carbon blocks (ca $25). The resulting TDS would determine if I'd change out the DI resin.

You want 1 micron, better yet .5 micron for your sediment and carbon block. The micron on the segment filter must be lower lower or equal to the carbon block, otherwise your carbon block will clog. Also I would buy from a well know aquatic retailer, usually much better quality for what we use them for.

i'll be ordering the new filters and probably a membrane so i have it when the other one eventually goes.

currently my TDS meter shows 7ppm from the water filtered from my spectra. testing the water that has not been filtered shows 419.

is 7ppm acceptable for my FOWLR setup or should it be lower?

Does your unit have a DI stage? If so replacing the sediment, carbon, and DI stage will most likely fix you right up. The membrane can and will last many years without replacement if the sediment and carbon stages that protect it are replaced in a timely manner. As for the TDS, the issue is we cannot tell what is in the 7TDS, it could be harmless could be harmful.... For a FOWLR I would not sweat it to much, but plan to replace the stages in the next few weeks.

i agree with paul - change out the filters and i bet your tds will drop to zero. Right now the membrane is probably doing the heavy lifting and it should be your last resort. if you make water now you will reduce the lifespan of the membrane (the most expensive component ofyour filter).
