Return Pump?

I am setting up my 120 gallon again so I am shopping around for a return pump.. Any recommendations from anyone? What size Mag would be my best bet... Looking to do an internal pump in the sump... Looking for something very quiet and efficient... This is an SPS dominated tank so I am looking for max flow... Total volume will be around 140 gallons... So possibly a turnover rate of maybe 20 times an hour?

Is it a RR? Using MegaFlow overflow chambers? One or two chambers? Your overflow(s) will determine how large of a return pump you can use.

I've been using a Mag-18 for my 90 with an Eshoppes dual 1" overflow and it has been very reliable. For the most part it is quiet, I can hear a little vibration from underneath in the basement. It's what works for me.

I hear there are more efficient pumps, but don't know what ones they are. So maybe somebody else can point you to them.

Accepted rule of thumb for "safe" flow through a 1" overflow bulkhead fitting is 600 gph, so a Mag 18 would work. Are they barbed hose fittings? If so, I would suggest feeding it into a 1" piece of flexible tube, using a reducing bushing, and then add a 1" to 3/4" 'Y' fitting to 3/4" flexible tubing to each of the returns in your overflow chamber. For any additional flow I would use power heads.

Mag Electric Efficiency?

I've used Mags in the past, and I must admit that they are relatively bullet-proof - i.e. they'll run dry for hours, and replacement impellers are readily available. Unfortunately they are watt-guzzlers, and I've switched to larger Eheims for continuous (24x7) use applications. My Mag 24 has been relegated to a water changing app that runs for 15 minutes whenever I do a water change...
