Hey, its me. The one who was complaining about electricity bill. This time my complaint is going to be about my water bill.

A rude shock was in store when I opened the water bill last month. It was $625 for the months of Jul-Oct. I have a sprinkler system due to which the water bill spikes during summer months but I dont remember ever paying over $275 per quarter in the past. So obviously this one puzzled me. May be the water company messed this one up? The sprinker system is broken? A faucet is leaking somewhere that I have not noticed?

One strange thing that I noticed that the RO booster pump was not functioning. This pump was installed six months ago and it was working fine when I installed although I wasn't checking it on an everyday basis. I figured that may be the booster pump is a goner. If the booster pump didnt work that means it wastes more water than usual but still it doesn't add up to the high bill. Because prior to installing the pump my bill was never this high.

Upon further investigating the system I realized that the system was continuously running waste water even though it wasn't producing water. In other words, my reservoir is full and no one is using the drinking water (I use the RO water for drinking purposes at home). There is no reason for the water to come out of the waste water line. I called BRS from whom I bought the system and told them a) the waste water continuous to run b) the booster pump is not working. They suggested I replace the auto shut off valve first and see if it fixes the problem. I got it replaced. That still did not fix the problem. I called them again, they said lets replace the check valve that is coming out of the Sediment filter. Only after replacing that valve did my problem go away.

This issue was not immediately apparent to me because I had the waste line permanently plumbed into my drain and I had no clue that the water continued to run until I saw the water bill. I am sure some of you are doing the same. I suggest pl. check your system every once in a while and see if the system is working properly.

Atleast I will know when the waste water is running.

The link below describes two methods to test if your Auto shut off mechanism is working properly:

What to Do When Drain Water Runs All the Time : Free Drinking Water | Support

All of us should include this as part of weekly maintanence I guess.

Arvind, I'm a little concerned about how you have that drain set up. It appears the RO waste (and maybe a 1 1/2 inch drain line and maybe 1/2 inch tubing) is simply draining into an open clean-out wye. The issue there is that you will get sewer gas coming back out that opening. In addition, if you have a sewer backup, you now have raw sewage coming out there as well.

I'm not liking that setup. Am I missing something?

I have a very similar thing in my home. Its where my washer drains. It is just open ended. my condense pump from my AC runs into it to. Every home I've ever owned has had it.

Just curious, but when the storage tank is full the entire system should shut down on its own. There should be a solenoid valve that the shutoff valve trigger's to shut down the water supply. Do you have this?

Paul,

The wye takes it to the sewage. Shouldn't there be a check valve of somekind which prevents from the sewage backup? This drain is from the original construction. Only I have added the additional drains into it. Not sure what's wrong.

I dont see a solenoid valve. I have a auto shut off valve like this:

this is what shuts down the system when the tank is full.

Gotcha
I had that before also. Not a big fan. I switched to this setup
Large Booster Pump Assembly 150 200GPD RO Reverse Osmosis System UP Pressure Use
but sized to my system. Since you already have the pump, I highly recommend getting the pressure switch, solenoid, and auto flush valve. All connect together, use the same transformer as the pump and work great in conjunction with each other. It will completely shut the water supply down prior to the pump.

Don't feel too safe with the trap, my septic clogged and apparently everyone had to drop a few off that morning, well I went into the laundry room and there were turds all over the floor. I call my wife and said your sh%% is on the floor, she said if I left something on the floor just pick it up, I said no, your sh%% is literally on the floor. She said good luck, I'm out shopping...

I think the moral of my story is if you flush the toilet and hear the shower gurgling, open the tank and get rid of the clog before it feeds back too far.
