RO water issue

I have an Air, Water, Ice RO maker and just tested my RO water with my TDS meter it is coming up 15 ppm. I tested it initially when I set it up and it said 0 ppm.

Could it be that my container is contaminated and that is the reason for the high PPM reading?

Is it safe to use 15 ppm RO or should I just trash the water?

Any ideas why it'd be reading high after 0 initially?

Can you estimate how many gallons you have made with those canisters, that will help those in the know .

Um figure since probably around January, and I'd say in that time span maybe 300-400 gallons? Honestly not really 100% sure.

But I'm figuring with my tank being 135 gallons capacity + initial 30 gallon sump in late January thats 150 gallon there.

Then I've done about 4 water changes so that is about 130 gallons.

Added a new sump so + 40 gallons + topping off 3-4 gallons a day in that time frame 250 gallons?

150 + 130 + 40 + 250ish? = 380ish I'd estimate.

Plus however many gallons the guy before you used.

My TDS is was at 14 the last time a checked....that was a while ago. I'm trying to hold off until the AWI group buy.

I doubt it's the container....put some water in a clean platic cup and test from there...that will outrule the container.

What's your TDS from the tap? Check the water after the membrane before the DI to see what it is there.

isn't that what he did - he said "RO water is 15ppm". Brando - are you giving us preDI measurements or postDI measurements?

is this the typhoon? it shoudl have a DI bypass on there. The reason why you want to measure the pre-DI is to figure out if you have to replace the DI.

I'm going to speak "generally" but the prefilters typically go for about a year and need replacing - get the "Tpack" from AWI. but if you've been lax and the DI has been getting a lot of nasty water - then the DI may also need to get replaced.

Hey Brandon - AWI sells DI bypasses that can easily be added.

I was glad to see your thread as I have not been following my TDS counts very closely. Can someone share the acceptable range? I just measured mine and they showed as 175, so I would think 15 ppm would make me thrilled. Hmmm.

You should test your TDS in a clean dry container. What is your TDS going in? If it is high (like Malulu, for example whos inbound is like 300+) then you're going to burn through your filters faster. Our initial filter set lasted thousands and thousands of gallons. Our inbound is 60. It lasted so long I thought our TDS meter was broken. That was from the folks on ebay. This last set from AWI didn't last as long. We're now at 25 and it is definitely (over)time to make the replacements.

When measuring the tds make sure your sample is in a clean GLASS container. Plastics sometimes throw off the tds numbers.

Thanks for clarifying that, Taz. I did mean to emphesize GLASS as well. Straight from the spigot, not from storage.

My ro/di was made up in a brute trash can. Regardless, I either had a test error or have worse then many people's tap water! I will test it in a clean glass container next with and without the DI.

Back to Brandon's thread...
Thanks

It was kinda talked about already, but the reason to test pre-DI is that a new DI filter can absorb quite a bit on it's own and can mask a dieing membrane or used up prefilters.

How would I test pre-di ? Mine doesn';t seem to have a bypass or anything.

Being an AWI unit I believe you have push in fittings. Take the tubing off of the in side of the last stage(DI) and take your sample there. When you are finished just push the tubing back into the fitting.

I'll have to test that tomorrow, I did test from the tap in the bathroom sink it says 80 TDS.

I'm not 100% sure which AWI I have TBH, going to have to check my manuals.

Thanks for all the help though everyone!
