I'm thinking of plumbing a tube out the side of my trash running to the sump in the basement floor, if I forget the Ro unit is on it will just fill to that point and start emptying into the sump. I already dumped 10+ gallons on the floor when the tube going into my trash can popped off and laid on the floor. Annoying.
Half-ass Solution: We use a 5 gallon water bottle that is put into the wash sink in the laundry room (where the RO unit is located). So when you forget to turn it off (almost every time), the excess goes down the drain and not on the floor.
I think the best is a shut-off, but I don't know how that would work in the small neck of the water bottle we use.
I Used to flood the basement all the time, with the subsequent fights with the significant other. I have since remediated the situation by using my ro with a solenoid valve and tied it to my AC3. I use 3 float valves in series so in any of the 3 triggers the water stops. As a precaution I also drilled My 55 gallon collection drum with an overflow to the house sump.
I live by a good timer that I clip on my belt. I use only DI purification, not RO, which fills my 55 gallon container in 3 hours. Typical RO systems are much, much slower - so maybe the timer is not a good solution in that case.
I would make the container a little bigger so you can put a float valve with an auto shut off to the unit. I havnt doen this yet as I don't have my unit but this is how it was explained to me on how to avoid making indoor swimming pools.
