Glue them down first. I bought the 10oz bottle because I glued a decent amount of rock structure. I'd also pick up a bottle of the accelerator. Once you glue them, you spray the accelerator on and the glue dries hard in about 20 seconds. After they were all glued, I filled in all the gaps with the Marco mortar. And what FoxChase said...I'd get a few big rocks and you can chisel away some smaller pieces to put together. I used Marco and you want to try to chisel smaller unique shapes, not circular shapes.

To give you a sense of dimension, my frag/lagoon tank is 32" from the front to back, and 12" deep. The tank is 72" long, but I only took a pic of about 3 ft on the right side. The left side is a 24"x24" eggcrate. There's only 4 main rock structures cuz I only wanted 4 points touching the ground to keep the flow as open as possible.

You can search "negative space aquascape" on YTube and it gives you a good idea of how to do it. BRS has a decent video.

When creating structure out of rocks, I like to use thermoplastic beads. If they're particularly heavy, or part of the base I use fiberglass posts (cut down driveway markers) and secure with the thermoplastic. I've also been using it to create bases to attach colonies to rock. Good luck!!

Watch this video - I bought an NSA rockscape from a guy on Manhattan Reefs and he used this technique to make his. He sent me this link and I'm going to try it myself for my new 220.
