Rocks

I am wondering if I have to many rocks in my tank. My theory is that they might be tightly packed causing detritus to build up therefore having high Nitrates. That being said I was going to pull the two worst HA rocks out and cook them. Now am wonder if I should remove a few more.
Any thoughts?

I also plan to scrape the overflow and remove as much HA as possible.

Densely packed rock can cause problems. I would try to create as many caves and arches as possible to allow water to flow through and behind the rock. I used 3" PVC pipe and fittings to help with this.

Yes packed rocks can cause problems. another thing that I do is b;ow off every rock with a powerhead every couple of weeks. Helps tremendously.

I agree with the others that posted so far.Seems to be the old fashioned piling of rocks(rock"walls") are a thing of the past.Open cave type, arches and sculpted piles are a better choice. Some use epoxy and pvc pipes, plastic pull ties, and even small sections of pvc pipe to elevate the rocks off the sand so no "dead spots" build up.Gd luck in whatever you decide

One thing I did discover last night. Is that my fuge light bulb was dead. I replaced it with a spare I found around the house a month ago. Not sure when it died as it comes on while I am sleeping. I was bored and started looking around which is how I found it. Anyway, now I have the fuge light come on earlier so I can see it before going to bed. No idea if this had any impact.

I think the only thing having no fuge light would affect the cheato not growing to its full potental..which I guess could affect nitrates, the cheato isnt absorbing the extra nutrients which in turn could feed the ahir algea.

Agree...Not much effectiveness if it isn't growing properly
