Hi All...Hope this is the right thread for this discussion.
I have aa 5-stage RO/DI unit that takes 160+ TDI water down to 0 at the DI outlet. It is stored in a 55 gal. high intensity, UV inhibited water storage tank with a 3/4" drain near the bottom. On average, I use 20-25 gals/week for top offs and small water changes. I add RO/DI water to the tank at least once a week and often 2x/wk to maintain at least a 45 gal level. I use a small air pump to constantly aerate the stored water.
My questions are: Under these conditions how long can the RO/DI water be kept and still be at 0 TDS??? Or,
Should I use all the stored water first and then make all new RO/DI water to fill the tank???
If you check the tds from your storage barrel immediately after you fill it, I'll bet you a dollar it is not still at 0 tds. Almost any contamination whatsoever in the container will move you away from 0 tds.
But for practical purposes, maybe that's not really the issue - if the price you have to pay for storing the water, and exposing the stored water to some very slight level of contamination is a few ppm tds, that's probably ok.
Keep a lid on your storage container and use an opaque container to discourage biofouling (remember this in not chlorinated water you're storing). Just like the rest of your RODI system, you should disinfect the barrel periodically (we recommend once a year for your RODI system).
I'm interested in what Russ recommends also as my process is probably overly complex.
What I do is every 3 months use a solution of half bleach and water with a small brush. Then I rinse the container and use a washcloth with a declorinator product to go over the whole inside of the container. Rinse then I fill it and again use a declorinator product in with the water for 12-24 hours. Dump and she's ready to use. Sounds like a lot of work but quite easy and fast. Probably much more complicated then it needs to be but the container comes out nice and clean with no residue from the bleach that could hurt the tank.
Ok since it was mentioned here I want to get an opinion on distilled.
I used to use it, then a neighbor got a RO/DI and made some for me every 2 weeks.
I only use it for topoff so I was using 1g every 2 weeks. I only have a 12g tank.
Now said friend moved.
The question now is going back to distilled....from ro/di....when I am using it for topoff of 1/2 a gallon a week on a 12g nano.........will I be ok?
