First time I’ve heard about them. I’m still scratching my noggin on this one. I don’t understand how it works??? I’ve read this a couple times, and still don’t understand it:

"Powered only by the hydraulic energy of brine water usually lost to the drain (i.e. no electricity required), the Permeate Pump forces product water into the storage tank, reducing membrane back pressure and maximizing available feed pressure."

Sounds like they finally figured out the perpetual motion machine, turning a blind eye to the first law of thermodynamics. :p

Permeate pumps are for RO/DI systems that have a pressurized storage tank. I have both, pressurized storage tank and permeate pump.

It works like a turbo charger in a car. It uses the flow of the waste water (exhaust) to force feed product water (air) into the storage tank (engine).

Storage tanks are pressurized at I think 25 PSI(?). So if you have 60psi on one side of the membrane, and 25 psi on the other side (back pressure in the system from the tank) your membrane is less effective than a system with no storage tank (60psi/0psi).

Good stuff Brian….I think my pea-brain is starting to understand, but it hurts.

So those of use who run their RO/DI water directly into a drum/bottle/bucket, these pumps would do nothing for us. However, if you have an RO/(DI) unit that also uses a pressurized holding tank, this pump effectively reduces the pressure differential between line pressure and you holding tank pressure. N'est-ce pas?

So the good news is that they haven’t solved the perpetually machine conundrum….I’ve got to get back to the drawing board…I’m close! :D

It made a HUGE difference in the production rate of water. I would say that, with the permeate pump, I'm producing water about 60% faster.
