rotten egg smell

Clearing out the rock...all my little rock worms are floating around. Wow this really got everything. Anyone know if the rock is still alive or should I dry it out? Someone suggested reusing the rock but boiling it first. You think good idea?

The_Codfather - sorry about what happened to you.

Well back to the clean up....the thing that really makes me mad is I had to pull out my awesome aquascaped rocks....all in a box now. :(

i say just get all the dead stuff out that you can and put the rock/sand back in.. then refill with water and let it cycle. After a week or so when the levels come down toss in a hermit or two and a few snails . that will help clean up any leftovers and eat some of the algae outbreak thats bound to happen. When one of my starfish died under a rock it took weeks for it to finally go away. but i didnt have much of a cleanup crew left when i broke down the big tank anyways.

While cleaning out the tank, the smell of the rotten eggs came over me...a lot of DEATH. Especially when cleaning out the sand. Stinks! Well it was running for about 1 month. Like one of my buddies said, could have happened when the tank was established with a bunch of corals and fish in it. That probably would have been a hobby stopper. All I can say, is if this happens again, i'm probably done. I'll take red hair algae any day. I am going to get a top of the line heater this time. It's just amazing that after all the tanks I have had, even counting the ones when I was a kid, this has never happened before. I wish things were made in the good ole USA and not CHINA!

Im rinsing the rock in RO water and letting them sit in the sun. I hopefully will have everything back in and running again in about 1 week. Wish me luck!

Thanks for all the help guys!

If the sand smells like sulfer then get rid of it. When we lost power for two days the same thing happened to our sand bed, we got rid of it and started with a new sand bed. The rock we put in a seperate tank and let it cycle. We added instant cycle stuff and probidio anti-ammonia stuff and that seemed to work pretty well.

Bio-spira is one of the products.

Bio-spira I believe is the most popular and a lot of people swear by it but I did not have it available locally to me.  I used Dr. Tim's which was great, it cycled the tank in less than two days.

Edit: Dr. Tims is what they have at Trop and that is where I got it.

DR.TIMS is the new product made by bio=spira so its the same thing either one is good.

called marineland yesterday. they want the heater, a detailed report of what happened, and a list of livestock and their value that died. I asked what was inside the heater, they said epoxy, magnesium oxide, nickle, and copper. I found this,

Great thread. If you have one of these heaters, I would replace it ASAP. The new Marineland Stealth Pro's with the new indicator light. Don't delay or be prepared to tear down your tank and start from scratch.

cleaning everything with vinegar. right now tank filled with water/vinegar mixture, running it through the filter now....again, you guys think rock is ok? i am rinsing in R/O water. should i do anything else as a precaution? again, copper, nickle, magnesium oxide, and some type of epoxy in that heater that may have escaped into the tank. Quick reply would be great since I am in turbo mode to get this thing running again...
