Yeah... That is some crazy stuff. Definitely not for your average tank :)

Seems like you guys all did exactly what everyone does after seeing my tank: Spend all their time at work the next day watching mantis vids on youtube, LOL.

I absolutely love the thing, it's soooo cool. I could stare at the tank for days on end if the light wasn't only on for about 5 hrs a day. I can't wait until he molts, since that's what I'm waiting for to upgrade his tank to a 30L and undo all the mistakes I made when plumbing and aquascaping. Oh well, it's not optimal, but it works for now and only has to last another few months at most.

Lesson 1 had to be:

Have a handle on aquascaping the rocks before I put a crustacean that can strike with 1000+ newtons or whatever ungodly amount of force it strikes with. I had an issue where I didn't put enough rubble in for him to make his burrow and he used a dozen Astreas instead. Completely ruined his burrow out of fear of an ammonia spike since they were buried a couple inches in the sand, but hey, they lived for a while longer until he just ate them instead. Having my friend distract the mantis with a fish net while I stuck my hand in to pull out the big rock he lives under was not exactly what I'd call fun, lol.

Please video the transfer to the new tank...it should be hysterical! lol

+1 on that, LOL.

You guys should have seen my attempt to get it in the first tank, lol. Netting it from the bucket to the tank after acclimation was a complete failure as he went ballistic, flapping around. Gave up on that after about 5 seconds since it was clear he'd never make it to the tank like that and I wanted nothing to do with chasing him around the floor. Had to just chase him out of the bucket into the tank with the net while I held it as close to the waterline as possible.

I didn't really think about how I'd make that work until I was acclimating him and was like uhhh, how do I get him from the bucket into the tank....

My plan is to trap him in a kritter keeper next time. That should be much easier. Now just to figure out how to lure him into it and shut the top in time while keeping all of my fingers intact.
