Running GFO for anyone a problem?

I have used GFO from BRS specifically their high capacity GFO. I have noticed when I run it, it would negatively effect my SPS coral. It appeared my flesh on the coral would peel away as if it was RTN. I am wondering if this was caused by the quick reduction of phosphates being removed and almost shocking the tank. I questioned BRS on this and they suggested that I do a reduced flow rate on the GFO so it would gradually reduce the phosphates rather than quickly. I would like to start the GFO again because I am having some diatoms appearing but I am scared to with my tank fully stocked with SPS and LPS coral. What ya guys think?

You nailed it. Slow is the way to go in this hobby. I would use less or reduce the rate that the water passes through at. Not sure how high your phosphates are, but don't take them down too fast

GFO can make your water "too clean" but this is usually due to having too much gfo in the reactor. Slowing the flow may help but you may want to consider reducing the amount of media too.

I'd also recommending double checking all your other parameters too, to see if something else may be causing the RTN appearance (alk, ph, temp, etc. can all contribute to this happening.)

Good luck. Let us know how you make out.

I haven't been using the GFO for a couple of months now and had no problems, so the other parameters don't seem to be the problem right now.

You could also put it on a timer and run it at intervals, i.e. on for an hour/off for an hour. Also, make sure your flushing the GFO before you start to run it in your system.

Hmm, I like that idea. Never thought of that. Maybe I'll do that (timer) along with a reduced flow. As for rinsing, that is a must and always have. Thanks for the idea!
