Oh Mark, you've hurt my feelings. I'm not sure if I can forgive you!!!...JK

And yes, everything I do is from Dr. Randy Holmes Farley, because I don't know what I'm doing. As far as recipe, and yes, it's a recipe, so that makes it more similar to baking than chemistry, I use 2 cups of calcium chloride (that doesn't have much water associated with it) to one gallon of RO/DI water (Although, don't tell Mark, baking is chemistry....did you know baking soda does the same thing yeast does, but by the miracle of chemistry.....puts little bubbles in whatever your baking by producing carbon dioxide (gas bubbles) when the heat converts the sodium bicarbonate to sodium carbonate! Enough Chemistry, I mean Baking). Anyway, it's easier for me if I simply refer you to this extremely well written article  that explains everything you'll need to know:

At my daily consumption of 1dkh-2dkh, (1 gallon a month) , this will last well over 3 years...if my uptake stayed at 1g a month, math says 5.9 years out of a 35lb investment. Pharmaceutical grade products.

The reason why I wouldn’t do my own DIY
Alk and cal at home. Using nonreef safe ingredient
For me it’s not worth the risk. The manufacture can change its ingredients at anytime. They can use something today that won’t nuke your tank and that can change in a year. They can find something cheaper and use that. That change can kill or nuke your tank. We already have so many things that can go wrong with our tanks. I want to be able to say everything in my tank is 100% reef safe.

I use kalkwasser to take the load of my dosing.
It’s cheap and readily available. DYI home dosing
Is not for me.

That’s why I use esv it’s not cheap but it works and
I trust it. It’s very consistent.

I have used other 2 part like BRS and I wasn’t happy. It’s not as concentrated as ESV.
So even when buying BRS cheaper I had to dose
More to keep the same numbers as esv.

Thanks Paul. Yes, I did know about baking soda/yeast. I was baking bread and no yeast so used baking soda and vinegar.

This is funny, I am baking soda into ash right now, I have been running diy soda ash and prestone driveway heat (calcium chloride) in every reef tank I ever had. I have never bought pre made 2 part and probably never will.
To date I have never had a problem, those companies are probably using the exact same bulk materials made by the same manufactures just labeled under a different name. but to each his own< if it make you feel safer then i say go for it

I will try the driveway heat once my 2 part runs out. Have done baking soda before.
