Sand

I purchased a bag of sand from a lfs and i'm questioning it. When i poured the sand in rodi water to rinse it, these black things started foating in the water. I want to know if this sand is suppose to be like this. I took some pics. The sand is Caribsea Agronite. I know if its bad the lfs will take it back. I just want to make sure.

Rich, is the sand live sand? if so whats the expiration date? also if it is live sand why rinse it in RO/DI water that will kill anything in it if not LS forget what i just said.. but i think the things floating in it shouldn't be a prob.. If i remember right when i added Caribsea Agronite to my DT I had a few things floating

That seems a lot for just a few hand fulls.. does this stuff look like wood?.. I would say.. now it's not live you could use it just a bit more work getting them bits out

I used that sand when I first filled my tank and did not have anything floating in my tank like that. I would take it back.

I think it looks more like wood (hence why it's floating) and it likely just got scooped up off the beach when they were collecting it to go to the bagging plant.

It may not be harmful, but I'd take it back just to be safe. You might want to see if there is a batch number or something on the bag... and make sure the replacement bag has a different batch number on it.
