Sandy Hook (pics from the bay side)

Last year it was nice for NJRC to do a beach clean up at Sandy Hook. It was scenic and beautiful. With summer here it's interesting how many more cars/people there are - although still not as crazy as say jenkinsons.

anyways - on the bay side of the park, the low tide recedes enough to find lots of fun little critters for the kids to spend a day on.

Either Dead or just some molts (likely the latter - though I couldn't tell)

Hordes of these hermits:

A few of these temperate nassarius (not nassarius vibex) snails:

I believe this is a juvenile menhaden / aka bunker / bait fish. There were quite a few swimming around in like 1" of water.

The sand was "clear" but the kids released the hundred or so hermit crabs (every black dot)

A dead 'sook'/female crab. It was in the water so I was thinking perhaps it had not been killed that long ago...

I caught this one swimming with a male...they were busy trying to procreate....hahahah. I left to get a bucket and my daughter was not able to coral the male to stay in the net...

(notice requisite princess bucket my girls insist on bringing to the beach)...sigh.

Beautiful day....(high tide at this point inbound).

By the way - I would have posted this thread as a single post - but apparently the new board does not allow more than 4 pictures/videos...hence my multiple posts...

Funny this weekend I was just thinking about the beach cleanup we did last summer.

We should do that again. It was actually pretty fun.

Nice pics by the way!

Nice pics Phil. By the way was that Horseshoe Cove? If it was man it has changed considerably.

By me in the bay there are a bunch of pipe fish and some puffers. You need a flashlight and go at night and can catch them easily with a net.
My son checking them out but I haven't been there with all the rain lately.

So did you guys go and buy your buckets together....:)

Those princess days are long gone for me.

Phil,
Next time when you go, let me know, I would like to tag along (following you on my car). I like these stuff however, I don't know how to get around in NJ SHORE :(

No problem. It's the exact same route we took for the beach cleanup, except the bay is on the opposite side. $10 per car. great deal. Just pack the kids in.

yep - it's whatever is past parking lot D all the way up the hook, before the fort though. There were a couple kayakers and fisherman. By the time we got there though, low tide had passed already and high tide (2:34pm) was coming in rapidly. It was quite interesting to see how quickly the water was flowing (the fish, hermit crabs and the pair of blue crabs we caught were all found in that fast flowing water). I thought I saw pipefish from the bridge, but couldn't be sure. Someone also stated they saw a turtle - which I presume was a diamondback terrapin - but I didn't see it.
