I’m considering entering my kids into the iplay America science fair, and want to check here if anyone has fun, creative, cheap ideas for a cool project. I’m open to making a group if a few of us want to have our kids work together on it. The fair is open for grades 3-12; my oldest is in 4th grade but my two younger kids will help (and probably be more enthusiastic about it as well). If several people are interested it’s probably better to split the kids up by age. Here’s the info: iPlay America’s Science Fair | iPlay America
I would love to make the project reef-related. One idea I have is using pulsing Xenia (im sure I can find someone looking to get rid of some) and measure pulsing with an easily controlled variable, such as temp; or possibly start with a few comparable colonies of a fast growing coral like gsp or Kenya and measure growth of target feeding vs broadcast feeding, or target feeding of different food types to different colonies of the same coral type and comparing growth rate, or pulsing rate if it’s Xenia, or even pulsing at feeding time vs non-feeding, etc. these are very simple and not ground breaking at all, but could be fun.
I have two unused ten gallon tanks (one a former sump so there’s a divider in it that can be used or removed) and a five gallon. if I use something like Xenia I may just ramp it into a nano tank for one of the kids to keep that stuff out of my main tank. Very cool coral, but I’m not interested in a xenia-only display tank down the line!
Any ideas/input appreciated. Thanks! And if the BOD is interested, happy to have some flyers or something from the club at our table if we do it.
