Just when I think things are going quite well, an unexpected surprise comes. It looks like I may be purchasing a home very soon. That means I will have to move the tank and I'm not too thrilled about that. I will see how everything pans out.

So, the first house did not pan out as expected. Which is fine with me, since I found a house that fits me a lot better. Settlement is Monday. :)

Now, I'm not sure what I want to do with the tank. I do want to upgrade, but I'm not ready to upgrade to what I really want quite yet. How feasible will it be to move the tank?

Yes it is feasible, you need lots of planning, buckets and muscle. Start thinking through the process now so you will be well prepared when the day comes to move

We moved twice in 13 months with three tanks each time (12, 20, 30 then 12 30 45) and while it took forever, it is very much doable with the right planning.

1. IF you can upgrade now, or even a partial upgrade now is the best time. When we moved the 45g it was a sumpless, HOB style system. When we moved, we bought another 45g and had it drilled and sumped and ready to go when we moved. The stuff from the 30 and 45 went into a 57g which was also already running when we moved so again it made it a lot easier. We were able to setup the tanks in the house before the full move which just made the move that much easier (though it was not easy).
2. If you can't upgrade not biggy. Break the tank down a few days early. Put the rock, and critters into rubbermaid containers with heaters, (or maybe chillers in your case), pumps, and anything HOB for filtration. You can "ark" critters like this for a while, heck we even through a light over one for our corals and they all moved fine. Now that you have everything out, you can clean and organzie your hard ware to move it all over in a timely and organized matter.
3. If you have sand, throw it out and buy new live sand. You won't have the time or the water to rinse it and I think the risk is WAY more than the reward of using old sand.
4. Dr. Tims one and only is really, really, really helpful at fighting off any ammonia/nitrate spikes from the move. When you put the water and then the live rock in, pour in a bottle and it will be very helpful.
5. If you can mix water in the new place, do it and have it ready for the move. If not, grab a lof of 5g water jugs and start mixing early and have it ready to go. Water is a logistical nightmare, so plan for it.
6. Friends are helpful and can be plied with beer and pizza.
