Not that I am afraid of SW technology but just never was taught. Have been doing the SW thing for about 6 yrs and was taught the "Old Berlin Method" by a friend of mine. This method is basically lots of rock, a protein skimmer and adequate lighting. Since then I've added an ultra-violet sterilizer, and posphate/nitrate/carbon filter pads but know there is a ton more I need to learn, which is why I am here. Hoping you can all fill me in. Research is all fine and good, but its better to get info from those who know and are using the tech they speak of. :p
 
The "old [style] berlin method" is still the basis of most reef systems today. So your really not that "out of date". Most of what has occurred is that people build on the basic system. Many add a refugium to grow pors or macro algaes. You can add a lot of high tech equipment, but I would recommend only doing that if you need it. Don't add it just because you think it would be nice.
