Sourcing Dowflake and MagFlakes

I’m going to do the homemade Calc, Alk and Mag recipes that are outlined by Dr. Randy Holmes-Farley:

We’ve discussed this before but I can’t find were we talked about sourcing MagFlakes and Dowflake. I can’t find either one. I’ve checked my local Lowe’s and Home Depot and neither has this stuff. They both have Preston’s Driveway Heat, but I would prefer to get the Dowflake. The Home Depot guy told me they carried both last year, but didn’t stock it this year.

So does anyone know where I could get these two ingredients. Thanks, Paul

be careful w/ the Dowflake, they've changed the forumla rendering them non-reef safe.

Rich, did they actually change the formula or did they just put out that disclaimer so that they wouldn’t be sued when your tank crashes? I just find it hard to believe that a company would purposely poison its product so that it wasn’t used in an off-labeled application. Again, I could see them putting out the disclaimer, but still hope that consumers continued to use it for whatever, just to get that few extra sales. I know a certain company that sold Retin A when they first discovered it “cured” aging. They put out the disclaimer of misuse, and in the same breath, ask how many cases would you like to order.

I read somewhere they actually changed the process that didn't take out a certain chemical any longer. I'm sure Reefcentral still has the info. You can get the reefsafe bulk products now from TB Aquatics or Bulk Reef Supply.

I'm pretty sure Dow stopped extracting Bromide from their calcium and magnesium products. A search of RC should answer the question. I'd say to search here but the only place I found anything on the subject was in a long winded debate a long time ago between two people more concerned with stroking their own egos than legitimately passing along information. It's not worth the hours sorting through the puffery to find any facts. . .
