Southdown sand

Does anyone use this sand? Will I be able to use it with a pump rated at 4000 gph connected to an OM 4 way on a 180 tank? I know this was the best sand to get at one time, but it seems like its to fine to settle at the bottom of the tank.

its pretty good. I have it in all of my tanks and is a good buffer it just takes a loooooooong time to settle.

Im going BB so i dont need it. I might be in RP tommorow after i set up the tank let me know

that must have been a long time ago. Home depot hasn't sold it in about 2 years or so.

yep - there was a rumor they renamed it. I call it collusion with the LFS stores! lol.

You are probably right about the collusion. but I think all the sand they carry now isn't aragonite based. many reefers have done the vinegar test on all the brands and none fizzle like aragonite should. If i'm wrong someone please correct me.

I wouldn't mind, but my wife might ;D ;D. It would mean driving me nuts with all the preparations. She becomes a maniac with when were having people over

C'mon, she shouldn't mind a hundred or so of your best friends showing up one weekend ;D

On a serious note, I wouldn't mind seeing that vinegar test done on several different brands - from commonly accepted to contractor grade.

I got three 5 gallon buckets of the southdown sand. Maybe a little more. I got it from a reefer that left the hobby. He never used it. I'm just afraid that it will blow all over the tank. Right now I have BB. But on my upgrade I'm really thinking about putting sand. I wouldn't mind seeing the vinear test as well.

The southdown is fairly small grained sand but if you mixed it with a different size you should be good. I use Fiji Pink and it's about as small as the southdown and i have no issues with it blowing all over the place.

But back to the vinegar test, If you take a little of the sand and pour vinegar on it and it fizzes and bubbles a lot its aragonite based, but if there is little to no fizzle it's silica based sand and IMO no good. Just my opinion on the silica based sand

Actually she probably wouldn't mind a 100 or so people over, she's a pretty good sport and humors me quite a bit with this hobby that has now become an obsession. ;D
