Sponges

Does anything eat them. Not pineapple, they are not a problem. I have this other sponge that looks like roots from a tree. It was ok in the sump, but now I have it in my DT. Supposedly exposing them to air kill them, but it's a bit hard taking out big chunks of live rock

Not really. Most things that eat sponge are specialized sponge eaters. You are looking at Rock Beauty's and Nudibranches. Please don't get a rock beauty for this though.

Sponges are part of the natural diet for butterflies and large angels and any part of the sponge that is exposed to air will die,
