Spotfin Butterfly Fish Collecting

Lets plan a trip to go up so Shinnecock Bay for some Fish collecting. Here's what I mean. It's about a 1.5 hour drive for me. So we could make a day of it!

i was told that the major storms coming our way will bring a huge amount of tropicals up along with it, so maybe some time during the coming week would be good.

Wild bog of fish! What are they again?

Nice looking but I guess they are not reef safe? Sorry really don't know
Not really, eat dusters and peck at everything. best in a separate tank. scuba thread has links about them.

Thats really the point. A 50 or 75 foot seine net right in the surf would yield those results. From my experience Angels that are introduced young in a tank with abundant food usually wont pick at corals. Its been my experience with just about every juvi angel I have ever had.

Those angle fish are sweet- There any small fish that you catch that can be kept in a 55? And what temperatures do they like.?

you use a 50 75 ft net??? that is one loooooooooooong seining net----i used a 30 ft---which was more then enough---but, it dry rotted after not being used for the last 25 years and when the water hit it a few weeks ago it just broke apart---(ordered a new one already)----
i think with a ride home that long the fish might not make it....
what about shark river, belmar, there have been posts about trops being caught there...
anyone have any updates about whats being caught in the shark river area???
might be time for another collecting trip!!!!

Just be aware that you need a license to use a seine over 50ft in NJ waters.

I was gonna head up to Shark river this weekend but mother nature ruined those plans. I would definitely be up for another diving/collecting trip. I haven't gotten wet in 2 weeks and I'm starting to have withdrawals.

I collected a bunch of them last week along with one threadfin lookdown and a really beautiful boxfish. I am going again next week for tropicals and blueclaw crabs for dinner 8)

i must say paul i am VERY envious of you---being able to collect different kinds of FREE fish and the fun you have collecting them!!!!
and then being able to sit at home and enjoy them........
my problem is not enough time!!!! and summer is coming to an end
good luck next weekend!!!!

Hurtback my problem is also not enough time. I retired 19 months ago and have been busier than when I worked. I may have to go back to work so I can take a day off 8)

aint that the truth--you retire with all kinds of plans for your free time...and what happens---something always comes up thats more important---i've started a 55 real salt water tank--few small green crabs,4 shrimp, 1 stickleback and bout 25 small killies---now i want more and different kinds----
they are fascinating to watch---the need to add differnet kinds has grabbed me---but that ' honey do list is always staing me in the face......
with MACNA, work, and my photography, time always go so fast on the weekends....
oh, HOW many hours in a day??? ???

will have to meet for a collecting trip...soon...maybe another 55 tank is in order for any NEW items i collect

good luck with your collecting next weekend and enjoy your crab dinner

I went down to Keyport NJ this Sunday for fishing and took out the seine net. We caught 4 Spotfins after about 30 minutes and a crap load of pipe fish looking things shiners, like 5 or 6 cock tail blue fish. This was down here in Dingy Jersey. I can only imagine whats up there in LI @ Shinnecock.

I live in Union Beach and my son and I went looking through the reeds growing in the water but cam up empty. Plan on getting seine net and trying again. Last week people had one and caught some puffers.
