Spotfin Butterfly Fish Collecting

They are there man. I was so shocked. I let them go though. My 125 was not set up yet and I really didn't have a way to transport them. What I thought was great was the fact that these are tropical fish and would probably have no problem at all of living in my reef. Hell we would be doing them a favor because they would inevitably die. We waded out to my chest and then back to shore. My Father in law never went past his waist. They seem to be hanging out right where the sand drops off and its a little deeper.

Here is some stuff I collected today along with a million pipefish which I returned to the sea, another million blowfish, which I also returned and a load of trumpet fish, needle fish, and wrasses.
We also collected five gallons of spearing, to eat. Me not the fish.
This picture was taken in my local tank where there is a regular light bulb so everything is yellow. The water also was just poured in right from the sea so it is turbid. The fish really have yellow and black stripes.

So they should be able to adjust to the warmer temps we have in our tanks. Very interesting. What are the names of the fish you caught today? And are they reef safe? I have a 125 hospital up and running that will need some new fish in it in a couple months....Not sure if I want to try any of these...But really cool

Is anyone going again- I would love to help out or make the trip- i am just starting my tanks and thing it would be great to start the tank this way

They are not local fish and come from the Caribbean so they don't have to get used to reef temperature. The butterflies would not be reef safe as they would pick on SPS corals but they are fine in my reef as I only have LPS corals with only one SPS. That little puffer would not be reef safe only because when he grows a little he will eat shrimp and crabs. Besides that he is fine as long as he stays small and can't eat the fish.
The other fish are (I think) jacks. I will give them away as they eat too much and I don't want to put them in my reef.

I may go again next week

man... that is so cool! i remember being young and looking in the surf at island beach state park with my goggles on, and seeing a bunch of tropicals (dont really remember what kind).. also last year while fishing the jetty at barnegat me and my wife saw a few small tropicals around the rocks, and a few guys landed huge triggers

I work at the Coast Guard station on shinnecock bay. I have seen some fish in our boat basin that are tropical looking, but never saw any angels

I would like to update this little sping burfish that I collected this last summer.
He has grown about double in size and is about an inch and a half, up from the 3/4" he was when collected.
He eats worms, clams and plankton. The butterfliesand wrasses we collected that same trip are also growing and doing fine. I will not be putting any of these fish in my reef.

Nikki those collected fish are in a 10 gallon tank with a small HOB filter and a small powerhead. No frills and just a few local rocks.

Tried today in the barnegat bay with a 16ft seine, 4 pipefish, bunches of minnows but no tropicals! Is it too early? Anywhere else for me to try down this way? I'm closer to ocean city or atlantic city, any good places?
