i will try to stop by your place to see the inside of the canopy.
thx

Thanks David..I'm not up to speed re posting photos.

Harry...Nice rock!!! I would be interested in how much, if any, of the colorful life you lose during the full curing process.
I lost quite a bit.

I'm hoping to not lose much at all. We'll see in about 4 weeks. I can't wait

Just keep the tanks calcium level up during curing and you shouldn't lose the coraline. I could be wrong but maybe people lose it because they figure they don't need calcium if there aren't any corals. I would dose and test once a week.

That's good to know, i never thought about dosing calcium to keep the coraline algae up. I've had pretty good luck growing coraline algae its all over 3 sides of my tank but a little extra help can't hurt.

What?? This isn't set up yet? I was wanting to see FTS! LOL

Rock looks good. Lots of color. I'm getting excited over here (yeah it's only 29BC). But tanks have a way of...uh...growing as you're seeing first hand ;)

Harry, I've also been told(just today actually) that the amonia levels can kill off the coralline algae and the color on the rock. So frequent water changes during cycling wouldn't hurt either.

Actually frequent water changes will lengthen the cycle. The water changes will remove the ammonia and nitrites which the bacteria need to feed on.

The coralline will grow back once the tank cycles and matures.

I think the general rule of thumb is doing a weekly water change. the first one is 50-100% depending on the die off and then i think it's about 20% a week. but too much ammonia and it will kill all life on the rock. I removed i'd guess about 90% of the organic matter that was on the rock i.e. sponges dead algae. anything soft i removed as best i could

Where did you get the rock from?

sent you a PM i wasn't sure if i was allowed to mention the company

Harry

Mention away!

Seatrademarine.com is where i got it. Bernie is the guy who runs it. He's in Medford NJ. real nice guy very personable. Great prices too. I have purchased most of my rock from him and i am highly pleased.

Well on a side note. I was doing some research and i saw a canopy design that i think i'm going with. the front will open sort of like a trunk so i can have full access to the tank. Now making it is a different story.

Thanks
Harry

Well after lots of research and sticking within my plan, I ordered a protein skimmer. I went with the ASM G4+ it is rated for tanks up to 400 gallons, using a sedra 9000 pump because i specifically wanted an insump skimmer. For the $$ it's a great value. I went and read many threads about this skimmer and there were few negatives and most people are happy and satisfied with the ASM. I also saw one in action and it produced tons of nasty skimmate. I also today ordered my acrylic sump/refugium. It's 48x20x20 which is roughly 84? gallons and should be plenty for my 215. Not sure on a return pump yet. I was thinking maybe a blueline. Any thoughts on how big the pump should be. I have 2 1" drains that are rated at 600GPH, but i'm guessing it is less there are 2 .75" returns. so should i go with a pump rated at 1000-1200GPH. the sump is under my tank so the head loss will be minimal. Pics to come soon.

Thanks
Harry

Bummer that you've already ordered it, I think BillyR has one of those for sale!

I picked up my skimmer today. Holy crap what a beast. it looks so big now that i have it. the ASM G4+ is probably a little oversized for a 215 but I didn't want to regret it later and have to purchase a bigger skimmer so i went as big as i could fit under my stand. I'll post picks tomorrow

i ran the G4x on my old 210g... you will enjoy it...

i did do the Gate valve mod though.. it dials it in real well...

Harry,

I just bought the same tank and I've been reading your thread. Can you send me a PM about where you ordered the skimmer and sump? I want to follow your progress and see what I can do with my tank.

thanks
Adam
