Folks, if you've recently upgraded or renewed your annual club membership but it's still not active, please reach out to the BOD or a moderator. The PayPal system has a slight bug which it doesn't allow it to activate the account on it's own.
1. Standing in bare feet and preferably a little damp, stick you hand in the tank. If you feel a tingle, you’ve got stray voltage.
2. Using a VOM (Voltage/ohm/meter…..also called a multimeter), set it to read AC VOLTS. Take one of the probes (and it doesn’t matter which one because it’s alternating current) and place the end in your tank. Take the other probe and touch to a good ground. I usually use the little screw in the center of an outlet coverplate. You will then be reading stray voltage.
Method 2 is preferred.
EDIT TO ADD:
If you only need a meter to check for stray voltage, and you don’t have one, you can pick one up at Harbor Freight for under 6 bucks…..HERE.
Identify the culprit by unplugging one by one. Once found, take it out and carefully place it on your driveway. With a large sledge hammer, beat the living crap out of it. Oh, and now you need to replace that busted up piece of equipment.
You guys are killing me will all your comments. For those of use who don’t use a grounding probe, Method 1 is how we usually find out about stray voltage. For all those that wish to use a grounding probe, you have protected yourself from a little tingle, but will not know you have a voltage leak until your fish start kicking from CURRENT flowing through your tank. Please look up the difference between VOLTAGE and CURRENT. You have current when the circuit is complete….a grounding probe. You only have voltage when there is no place for it to go. I shall step down off the soapbox now.
