Stupid stupid stupid mistake

I feel dumb even posting this but if it makes even one person think twice before doing the same then I helped.

I have been dealing with a bit of RTN in many acros. Not all at once but a few here and there. They look good then next morning gone. Anyway I believe the culprit is Alk swings. I have been dosing manually and trying to bring up Alk slowly. We yesterday I finally hooked up my dosers and got them started again. Set to 40ml a day each. Well today I though it would be a good idea to turn on my Alk doser and let it go for a few min extra to help raise my Alk some more. Guess what? Not a good idea.

What was supposed to be 10 min turned out to be 2 hrs. I completely forgot about it. I was heading to set a timer, got distracted and that was that. Anyway my Alk went from 7dkh to 9dkh. And my ph also went up from 7.90-8.35.

So far everything looks ok good PE and fish seem happy. The ph has since dropped to 8.25 and I expect it to drop to normal by morning. Hopefully all is well when I wake up.

REMEMBER, dosers are controlled by timers for a reason.

Hope all turns out OK. We've all had our "Doh" moments....more some than others. It boils down to the fact that men cannot multitask. I was doing a water change a couple weeks ago, siphoning out the water into five gallon bucks, and my wife asked me a question. That's all it took. Before I knew it, I hear water overflowing the bucket onto the floor......DOH!

I have periodically done things of monumental stupidity in my hobby life. Things like this happen in business, in medicine, in science too. When it's your mistake, you own it. In those other things, it gets buried. Don't beat yourself up, in all those venues you learn from it and move on.

Just last week i turned my ro unit on to fill a 10 gallon container and completely forgot to shut it off before proceeding to go to the dealership to buy a new car. And we all know how long that takes. Ended up flooding out the kitchen into the garage. I was able to use towels and dry up the kitchen floor before my wife could see and i almost got away with it until the next day when she stepped out in to garage bare foot and the rug in the garage was completely soaking wet. I had some explaining to do then.

Ouch, LOL. Almost got away with it!

John, at least you caught your error when you did and although that was a fairly quick spike, the range you ended up at wasn't too bad. I think everything should be fine. The good news is you learned a lesson and won't likely make that mistake again. ;)

I have promised myself that I wouldn't flood my fish room I do it so often I gave up getting upset. Rodi overflows water change mishaps. I've got to force my self to sit in one spot and not get distracted. I guess I'm lucky the floor outside the fish closet only has a little warped laminate floor planks... My wife hasn't noticed. Yet.

I use those now too. Sometimes they get twisted and don't activate though. That's why I just bought an auto shut off kit from the last GB. ;)

About forgetting to turn off RO/DI units ... This thread is what reminded me - I have a bunch of towels in the dryer now.

Thanks, everyone! LoL.
