Subliminal's 11g Frag Tank Build

Well, I decided I'm good with coral and bad with fish, and since this is supposed to be an enjoyable hobby, I'm going to stay in my lane.

To that end, I decided to try my hands at a small frag setup.

Equipment so far:

18x18x8 acrylic frag tank:

Oceanic 30 gallon cube(ish) for secondary display/refugium, pictured in a WIP stand:

Sicce 1.5 Return Pump

To yet be purchased:
Heater
ATO (probably go with the autotopoff.com float switch type)
Wavemaker (probably go with the Hyyger Nano)

nice. oversized sump I see. could probably grow corals in both top and bottom.

any noise from the single overflow? that's what I am going to have.

Funny. I took that pic and was reading horseplays reply and it flooded all over. Ha. Didn’t pay attention but the water is a little high in the pic. Whoops. Adjusting the overflow. Too open and it’s noisy. Too closed and…floor.

Yeah I’m going to do a display fuge type thing. Lots of love rock. Probably softies and nems. I think maybe like a pair of gold stripe maroons. It’s 30 gallons.

Too will be a shelf rock, drilled, with sps. Maybe just a couple of good ones. Would like to get some fun ones to sell. Fruity pebbles, Homewrecker, Walt Disney. That stuff ;-)

No. I put a strainer on top and have the overflow as a straight pipe with the strainer about an inch below water level and a valve to adjust. Probably could have gone with a sicce 2.0 rather than a 1.5, but it seems to work well.

Good to know. I have two holes in my 30g I am debating whether to go with a herbie or much simpler the one drain setup.

I gotta tell ya for peace of mind, a backup is a nice option. I only have the one and it seems to vibe working fine but i feel like I might not sleep the best tonight. Ha.

Halide is out, was only getting about 200 par in the middle and 150 anywhere off to the side. New light in, 330 par in the center and down to 260 or so towards the edges of the rock plate.

A little progress made…

Frag tank. Nothing special growing. More of a test.

definitely still have some kinks to work out.

One drain with just a strainer is not optimal
Chaeto loose in a tank with a return pump is not optimal
Fluval evo stock light over a 19 inch deep tank is not optimal

So…work in progress. :)

You could always Drill it for another drain

Made a little progress in the grow out tank this morning.

First, thanks Mark (Madreefer) for the light for the display sump…fits and works perfectly.

Got some new pieces to grow out in the frag tank.

…and learned how to scrape acrylic properly. Hehe

Here’s how she currently sits:
